how to determine load sizes?

Ever want to know what is the laundry load size without weighing it on a bathroom scale?

Helps but still does not indicate how one loads the laundry in the drum. I mean do people fold their laundry 'neatly' & placing it into the washer? I just toss stuff in so that there definitely be air gaps in the load & the actual load could really be smaller?!.

Will be checking other sites for a 'howto load laundry' for starters. Curious as my LG WashTower seems to look like it is half full with my towels load, and especially when I do bedding where there is only a bottom sheet, duvet cover & 2 pillow cases. Currently I believe that my loads are small even if it looks like half full......

Your link above doesn't work. Don't type quotes when pasting or typing URLs. The board software will automatically make it clickable link. Or the Link function in the selections below the composition window can be used to hide the URL under descriptive Text to Display but again don't include any extraneous characters with the Web Address (URL). Type in the Text to Display first, then paste the URL for the Web Address. The Web Address entry can be done first but then it'll also appear as the Text to Display, which can then be changed to something else.

I've only over loaded my front loader once and the machine let me know.

I don't remember what the load consisted of but I think it had large bulky items that got very heavy when wet (blankets and such).

I always watch the machine (especially when I first got the front loader, to watch detergent dose/suds level and load size amount).

Well the Electrolux must have sensed either belt slippage or too much resistance trying to tumble and threw an error (Call For Service).

I took out one of the large items (you can pause the Electrolux at any point with out it draining and open the door), restarted the cycle and it was fine.

I wouldn't suggest a full drum in any machine.

The max I put in is when I wash bedding, California king waterbed sheets (top/bottom), mattress pad, 4 king pillow cases and duvet cover.

This is something that has puzzled me too. I think I read that some of the sports of Fragrant Bouquet like Fried Green Tomatoes, Fried Bananas etc. were catagorized before anyone had grown them up to full size - like Ken said. What I wonder about is the books I have of Diana Grenfall's will describe something as small/med with the dimensions (height and width) given as larger that one listed as medium. I think sometimes you get mutant plants too. I have a Wolverine that is 6 years old. It's getting fuller but is not even the size of a Tiara. Curtain Call it's sport is four or five times bigger. Maybe I should just get another one? Hey Ken, "THIS IS ONE REASON I KEEP TELLING YOU ALL TO TURN OFF THE COMPUTER.. AND GO SEE THEM WITH YOUR OWN EYES" I'll be right over. Around here the most Hostas I can see in one place would be in my garden. 90% of what I have was bought based on pictures and descriptions. If I saw some of them full grown somewhere else I'd probably get a complex!

The size and placement all depends on your furniture placement and walkways. You could make an 8' X 10' newspaper template and see how it fits with your furniture proportions and walkways or mark out that space on the floor with pieces of masking tape and stand back to judge it. You may find that you need a bigger rug or that it needs to be set at an angle in the room to best fit the area.

May I suggest that you check out a book from the library by Sarah Susanka entitled, Creating the Not So Big House. The next to the last chapter is titled, Creating the Dream House. In 1999, Sarah's architectural firm designed a 2100 sq. ft. dream house for LIFE Magazine. This house was built in Minnesota for a hypothetical family of four in two versions, a scaled down version and a more expensive version, using the same basic floor plan. She discusses what was done, construction and design-wise, to reduce cost but provide a distinctive look and deceptive space-enlarging features. Some examples are as follows: 1. Standard materials were used inside and out in the less expensive version. To quote the author, "Interest and spatial variety were introduced with color and lowered soffits--elements that are relatively inexpensive but have significant impact." The house really does look architecturally interesting, not like a cheap track home. 2. There are almost no walls downstairs, mainly support columns, to open up the downstairs. 3. The front door is exactly opposite the back door, thus visually extending the sight lines. One is also able to see diagonally across the downstairs. 4. The more corners a house has, the more expensive it is to build. The foundation of the main portion of the cheaper home has four corners, a connecting section to the garage, and the attached garage. I really learned a lot from just this one chapter. As far as what personally has worked for me, here is some feedback. When our two sons were growing up, our home was 1900 sq. ft. with no basement but some storage space in the attic. The size worked fine for us as a family and as empty nesters. As a widow, I down sized to a 1475 sq. ft. patio home and would not want to go smaller. Both homes were one story (I hate stairs), contemporary, had vaulted ceilings, and very open floor plans, and rooms serving multiple purposes. For example, none of the bedrooms in either house had typical bedroom furniture. For example, the master bathrooms in both homes have been large and had built-ins for storing all clothes so that the master bedroom serves more as a sitting room. The master in my current home has a hide-a-bed sofa. I sleep in the small bedroom across the hall. The bifold doors were removed from the closet in that small room so that I have my computer, file cabinet, and built-in desk in that alcove so that it also functions as an office during the day. As Sarah Susanka advocates, both of my homes were selected on purpose to be somewhat smaller so that the funds were available to have a more interesting house architecturally and in the interior design.

Don’t over-analyze it! You can easily fit something 50-60” wide. Our squarish room is about 300sf (with lower ceiling). We just replaced our white fan with a big 42” black chandelier too. I miss the fan on warmish days, but not enough to regret this. I think you could definitely go with something that has more vertical mass, but there aren’t any rules. I’d start with the finish you want, unless you’re not sure. You’ll also get lots of suggestions here too 😉 (one photo shows it before we took it back down to scrape & retexture ceiling)

georgect, that is a pretty impressive load for the machine to handle. My LG would have given me a fit trying to balance it for a final spin. Curious as to how many towels can you easily wash at one time.

Sometimes it has a hard time trying to balance my bedding load of laundry, sometimes it's not an issue, it just depends.

When I do my white regular load, it will have 4 bath towels, 2 hand towels and 2 face cloths along with underwear for the week and 4-5 white kitchen towels and maybe a few pair of white socks.

I think I need to explain in more detail regarding laundry loads.

I see demos/examples/adverts that show howto load stuff. In the beginning all loads I see depicted are neatly folded FLAT no matter what is to be washed. If the stuff are folded flat, the load size/amount seen would be differerent than when stuff is just tossed in where the stuff is fluffy(?) with lots of air pockets. e.g. my queen bedding load usually look like nearly full in the 4.5 cf tub; if folded flat, the bedding won't amount to hald or maybe 1/3. Towels look to be around 40% to 30% maybe as when I placed the bath towel on either side of the bath mat then the other miscellenous towel, the load looks much smaller than when I just tossed all the towels into the tub.

So for dosing the detergent, when it is stated 1/3, 1/2 or 3/4 of the tub for loads, it makes some difference(?) how much detergent & how the laundry loads are done. I am just curious but not enough to experiment.
