Quartz is popular because it is natural looking, consistent and somewhat stain resistant.

I am generally not a fan of manmade things trying to look like natural things - I'd prefer the actual stone. I could definitely see using quartz for a monochromatic look that is challenging to get in stone.

I thikn the quality statement is more about what you want it to look like and how good of an installer you have. The raw material is pretty much the same. It's certainly very popular and won't be looked at as a low quality finish.

I am the opposite of just_janni. I have no problem with quartz imitating marble, granite or anything else. I have a marble-look quartz in my kitchen and I love it.

As you can see, varying opinions. You can look at the material to begin the evaluation process. There are Chinese versions. So check all the data on each example.

Quartz is anything but natural looking. lt looks fake, because it is fake. Crushed quartz particles mixed with plastic resins, that’s what ”quartz” is. It’s uniform in appearance, and has no depth. The complete opposite of natural looking.

Practicality and consistency with the design of the space it's in should be the measure of any material.

Not everyone grew up exposed to the real stuff.

Some might have only lived in homes with formica and happy to be able to use a quartz product.

No need to put down other options that you might not like and/or wouldn't want to use.

I've had corian, granite and quartzite kitchen counters. I've also had cultured marble, tile, limestone and quartz bathroom counters. Some I chose and some I didn't, but bottom line they all performed their intended function.

I'm building and using quartzite in the kitchen and quartz in all the bathrooms and laundry. It all works!

Great way of putting it, Chispa. I have a problem with chipping away at the earth. Don’t like clear cutting trees? Why are you cutting up the earth.

Perhaps because the wealth created by the stone mine stops an indigenous 3rd-worlder from having to hunt endangerd species to feed his family?

I have quartz in my kitchen and two of my bathrooms and I love it. It looks great, is easy to maintain and imo doesn't look fake at all. I love that there are so many great countertop options available for the look and durability people want.

I bring it up because no one seems to talking about it. It is a valid question that most people seem oblivious to. And we will get into a political and environmental discussion that is not appropriate to this discussion. Just something I think people should consider.

Life is a series of tradeoffs. Unless you are using sustainably sourced butcher block (or wood harvested on your own property, or tiles made with clay from your soils, etc) - EVERYTHING has an environmental impact.

Gas is bad, but so is mining for lithium needed for all the batteries. You can paralyze yourself with the analysis.
