Veggie Tales - December 2017
Comments (96)Jack - that is the greatest chia pet ever. And I mean GREATEST! The best. Like none other... I've been absent from the boards for just about the whole month of December (too busy brewing – have done 40 gallons of beer and 15 gallons of wine so far!), but Sunday I went through all my seeds and put in my order at Johnny’s. Also sowed some lettuce, kale, and spinach for S&G…should have done that a long time ago but better now than never – maybe it’ll last long enough to transplant outside when it starts to warm up (we’ve been at or below zero wind chill just about every day since Christmas - I have a hunch we are going to have a long cold winter). Jack are you doing regular onions from seeds this year or just bunching? I think I remember you thinking that seeds weren’t worth it based on the last couple years results. I’ll be doing seeds if only to have something growing in January – Monastrell, Walla Walla, Sierra Blanca, and Moonshine from Johnny’s. I have to start planning my plant start donation/sale benefitting my moms MS Walk team. Last year was a hit even though it was poorly planned and spur of the moment. I did tomatoes and peppers only but had some people asking about cukes, zukes, and herbs so I might add those to the list. Problem is keeping the varieties o a reasonable number. I had 10 tomatoes and 7 or 8 peppers last year. Here’s my list so far (subject to change - let me know if there's anything glaring you see missing): Tomatoes – Big Beef, Amish Paste, Black Krim, Black Cherry, Big Boomer Cherry, Moskvich, Sun Gold, Giant Garden Paste, Cherokee Purple, Early Girl, Brandy Boy. Peppers – Jalepeno, Baron Poblano, Hungarian Wax, Lunchbox, Habanero, Ghost Chili, Doux D’espagne. 1 slicing Cuke, 1 pickling (variety TBD) Yellow squash, zucchini Basil, Oregano, Thyme, Parsley Might pull up some strawberry runners to sell. Probably will sell some of the onions starts too. I need to get my greenhouse built !!! That has to be a priority this year....See MoreVeggie Tales - December 2019
Comments (445)Happy New Year to you also, Margi! And Happy New Year’s Eve to everyone! An update on the microgreens I started on Sunday. One of these is Johnn'y Spicy mix and the other is a Mild Mix (I added some red amaranth to both of them) And I started a few lettuces (I can't remember the variety right now) I have been trying Espoma's seed-starting mix. It seems to work well, but it has some larger chunks of composted material and isn't as fine as some of the other mixes. I have decided to follow in the footsteps of the rest of you and pick up a container of ProMix in a couple of weeks to use for some things. I still go back to Jiffy Pods for a lot of my seed-starting needs though. I know a lot of people hate them, but they are so convenient and work well for me. I'm at work for half a day today, then I am off for the Holiday....See MoreVeggie Tales - December 2020
Comments (286)Lea, I think only squash grows faster than tomatoes-I have already had to move the light over the squash up two notches and peppers are definitely slow growing until they get about 5 or 6 inches tall. Cindy, I have about 100 sprouts now in the onions and leeks zone (where I am using the full spectrum light) and close to the same on tomato sprouts-still waiting on the peppers and the new seeds I just got in. The kohlrabi is sprouting like crazy-I always drop too many seeds in because they are so tiny....See MoreVeggie Tales - September 2022
Comments (136)Cindy as I type we got about ~1/4" so far but expecting up to 2" or more depending on where this tricky Ian goes once he hits the Mtns. The spaghetti models still show it backing up around the Va/NC border before heading out to sea so we shall see. I just want 2" over 4 days but beggers can't be choosers ;-) It is getting rather breezy out there, more to come.....RD, very nice crop of tomato plants you have there! I envy you, wish we could grow them here during the winter, we're down to 6 maters on the pantry shelf with 3-4 struggling fall plants with a few good greenies hanging on, they're swinging today, nyuk....See MoreLoneJack Zn 6a, KC
