Uh-oh I planted everything in MG Organic :(
Comments (10)That one person relates he has figured out a way to make a particular practice work to his satisfaction is not a clear indication it will work to the satisfaction of others, or that it is even a good idea at all. There are many reasons to limit the use of the same soil to a single season, or two if you need to stretch the useful life of a more durable, bark-based soil. There is no way to deny that particle size gets continually smaller in a soil that is pressed into years of service. As particle size gets tinier, water retention increases. You cannot amend a soupy soil with larger particles of fresh material and claim it drains well and stays evenly moist. Science just doesn't work that way. E.g., how much perlite would you need to add to pudding to make it well-aerated and free-draining? As far as the bone meal, green sand, E-salts, Sul-Po-Mag. and blood meal goes: the bone meal remains largely (almost totally) unavailable in plantings used for a year or two, blood meal is very fast to give up it's N and is very volatile, losing more N to the atmosphere than plants use and releasing too much ammonia to be safely used at soil temps below 55*. The Sul-Po-Mag and and Epsom salts both contain Mg and S, so the only advantage from the Sul-Po-Mag is in the fact that it supplies K. It is already very high in S, so the inclusion of it in a program with E-salts (Mg + S) is almost completely redundant & unnecessary. It would make much better sense to add a half cup of potash/cu ft of soil for the extra K than to unnecessarily raise EC and TDS with unnecessary S and Mg to get a little K. Alternately, why not just use ProTeKt 0-0-3. Or, you could skip all the extra steps & simply use a good fertilizer like Peter's Professional 24-8-16, MG 24-8-16 or 12-4-8, or another very good fertilizer that contains ALL the macros, secondary macros, AND micros in the right ratio, Foliage-Pro 9-3-6. Comments (35)Yeah, my neigbhors asked me how I was able to achieve that many plants. They saw me working on the garden around early March. They were curious about the garden beds I was making. They saw the milk jugs. I explained to them what it was and also gave them the Wintersown site. I actually watched their reactions when they saw it. They didn't pay much attention to it kinda like "oh, ok". However, when plants started to come out/bloom, they went back to me and asked, "was that from the tiny greenhouse". :) I'm going to make more beds maybe by fall once my knee gets better. :D Thanks mnwsgal! :)...See MoreUh-oh - big problem with my lilies - see pics
Comments (9)Thanks grumpy, I think the oil was added to this recipe for insects...like scale and such. Sometimes I add it and sometimes I don't. I can't tell a difference either way. I do use ivory liquid dish detergent (not the bar soap). Someone told me that Dawn dish liquid was too strong and would kill my plants. So I bought the Ivory. But now I've read other people who say they only use Dawn. So I'm not sure which is best. I've been spraying and nothing seems to be getting worse. I didn't have this problem last year. And this year we are in the middle of a drought. I can't remember the last time we had rain...months and months ago. I don't know if there's any correlation? Keeping my fingers crossed, here. I may get blooms despite it all!...See MoreUh-oh! What have we done!
Comments (27)Jasper looks handsome, as always! Vaccumfreak, did you find real fleas anywhere on/around him? I found tiny black spots under Nikita's chin once, and freaked out thinking it was flea residue. It was acne I guess, and disappeared once she was bathed and scrubbed carefully under the chin. Our vet gave us an antibiotic cream to put on a boil she got on her lower lip once (that probably was flared up acne too). I use a lil dab of it on her chin sometimes and that seems to keep the acne at bay. I guess I'm really lucky that Nikita and Simba love bathtime. I bathe them once a month and they seem to like hot water rahter than lukewarm. Max is OK as long as water doesn't touch his face. Simba loves to sit on my shoulder when I'm in the shower; I don't relish that one bit LOL he's just such a big baby....See MorePaul F.
