Creative heating solutions/installation ideas wanted (long)
Comments (7)I have not seen those. Thanks for the suggestion. I am looking to hide or decrease the foot print of the heaters elements, not change them out. For example, using slant fin, lay them around the room perimeter. Where they hit a stud, cut the fins with tin snips so the center pipe lays flush with the studs. Then back each bay with a metal reflector. Use plastic pipe hangers (called mickeys?) to suspend the heaters. Then I could build wood boxes with a gap along the floor and a gap along the wall so the heat can move through them. I also thought about using a radiator panel. Again, thinking of something creative. However, if I go through this much effort, maybe installing radiant in floor may be worth the effort......See MoreDon't understand how my heating system works
Comments (4)It is unlikely that that same unit is heating your water and providing space heating. There is no way anyone can tell how your heat works based on your description. You are going to have to go into the crawl space and attic to see if you can identify ducts, pipes, and a furnace or boiler and to take pictures to post for us. I think it would be better to have an expert explain your house to you. Hire another house inspector to go over the place and explain it all to you. It is probably worth the price to be enlightened....See MoreBuilt-Ins around baseboard radiator?
Comments (6)That's OK, hendricus. I think I pretty much have the idea. And thanks for the info, mightyanvil. That works better with what I think we're going to end up doing anyway. We're just going to buy some basic bookcases with the cardboard backing and cut the backing so it doesn't extend all the way to the bottom of the bookcase. We'll leave the bottom shelf open up to about 16inches. Air can then flow through and out the bottom shelf and up behind the bookcases and over the top. We already have some bookcases in front of the radiators and I just checked and I can feel heat rising up behind them. All I need to do is cut that cardboard backing to let the heat out the bottom. Thanks everyone!...See MoreLong Drapes and Baseboard Heating Question
Comments (7)As it's been stated already putting anything in front of your heater will stop the heat from getting into the room. What I would suggest is to have a shorter winter drape and keep the longer drapes for the summer. A great way to create two seasonal looks and you may even want line the winter drapes with a thermal lining for greater efficiency. If that idea doesn't appeal you, consider a honeycomb blind or roman shade in your window for the winter and leave your drapes off to the side. For electric baseboard heaters check with your local fire hall as to what the requirements are for the drape to be above Ex. 8", 10", 12". Each municipality will have their own rules. *This is very important if there is a fire and your drapes where the cause your home insurance may not cover you....See Moreelcieg
