Remodeling Lighting Design Dilemma

Help Picking Foyer Light Size!

Hi ya'll! I am going to be buying a new foyer light and need to figure out which size to buy. The current measurements of my foyer are width 9ft (wall to wall) and length (front door to pillars separating foyer to living room) 19ft. The fixture I want comes in 2 sizes-- a 12 light that is 48"W x 41" H and a 8 light that is 36"W x 33"H. I think my current fixture is about 30Wx 37"H (but not sure bc hard to measure).

Which size should I get for my 2 story foyer? Also open to open to other lights too....

My concern is more about the height. I think I’d look for something taller.

IMO, your original light is more in keeping with the style of the home. Have you thought of simply modifying it by removing the arms and lights?

This is from hinkleylighting.com HALL AND FOYER: Hall and foyer fixtures can create a welcoming atmosphere, while providing you with the general lighting you need to greet guests and assure safe passage into other areas of your home. Use flush and semi-flush fixtures, large chandeliers or pendants and sconces in hallways, stairways, and foyers. HOW TO SIZE A FOYER FIXTURE To determine the overall height of a hall or foyer fixture, always keep in mind the bottom of the fixture should be at least 7 feet from the floor. This will determine whether you use a flush, semi-flush, or if you have a tall ceiling, a multi-tiered chandelier. When sizing a chandelier or pendant for your foyer, add the length and width dimensions of the foyer area together and convert the total into inches. Example: The area is 18 feet by 14 feet. Added together this equals 32 feet. Then convert your sum to inches: the chandelier's diameter should be approximately 32" in width. In a two-story foyer, if there is a window above the front door, center the chandelier so it can be seen from outside. If the foyer is extra-large, you may also want to install sconces in the foyer. Sconces should be installed 60" from the floor and 6 - 8 feet apart. Since a standard ceiling outlet box will only hold a maximum of 50lbs., some large chandeliers and foyer pendants require special mounting hardware. Hinkley fixtures weighing more than 50lbs. are marked in this catalog for your convenience and will come with additional heavy duty support hardware and complete installation instructions. Please help me pick a medallion or not for foyer. Not a fan of them and I wouldn't do one in my home due to it affecting a potential sale at some point. I would much rather have a nice tile in a pattern. Right now medallions seem to be the in thing. Eventually houses will be sold that are being built now, all having different medallions. The potential buyer would have to like what you picked out. My tastes are more towards something like Mustangs picked, but not everyone likes floral either lol As a buyer, having to remove flooring like that is a messy job, and if I could find a house without one, I would go for that.

That's a fairly dark gray. I hope there are lots of windows for natural light. If you select satin chrome light fixtures they will be the same value as your walls and blend in to the walls. I would contrast with fixtures in an iron like or blackish bronze finish Designers do not typically recommend lights on ceiling fans. The quality of the light is typically not flattering.

IMO a chandelier should light the table not the ceiling and that one with those edison bulbs and their poor light quality in a 16’ ceiling will provide no light at all. A fixture wider than your table IMO looks wrong so maybe a smaller one over the table and a larger matching one in the entry would work. I actually like linear lights over rectangular tables and the height from the table top really needs to be 30” usually as for seeing past it your eye will just naturally look past the light. You have a huge space but IMO it looks quite contemporary so I would look for more contemporary type lighting and with down lights instead of uplights . IMO a chandelier is like a piece of jewelry and does not need to match any other lighting , if it and another light are seen together then the other should have some elements that work with the chandelier for instance the same color metal or the same shade but not matching exactly. HU-187528210 I did think about getting a taller light......the two tier circular chandeliers are double the price of the one tier...but I do like them! I was hoping to stay under $1,000. Thank you for the photos, those really help with be able to visualize how it would look. Any other suggestions would be great.

decoenthusiaste I agree that the foyer chandelier goes with the style of my home in the pics........but I just completed a kitchen remodel and the lighting in there is pretty modern. I also just changed out the light in the dining room....so I am wondering if I need to change out the foyer light to go with my newly updated lights. I'm stumped....

Do the kitchen and dining room open off the foyer? Generally, foyers serve to introduce you, your style and hint at what to expect in adjoining spaces. Nice kitchen, BTW.

It's such a big pretty foyer, have you considered doing two lights? One in the entry and one in line with the staircase? Wow, that would be stunning

Idk, you need something traditional and noticeable, I think black iron is a good choice here as a statement, however, you have use a lot of the square cage-style already, you could either mirror that similar to the dining fixture or go round to break it up a bit. OR. go with the wow factor and do a chandelier
