OK pricklypearcactus, you're making me do alot of research now.... Here's the 3" flapper, model# THU175S, used on Toto "G-Max" 1.6gpf toilets, like the original, now-discontinued Drake: That flapper, from what I've been told, can be replaced by model# THU140S, which was used on their "Power Gravity" 1.6gpf toilets that were their midrange models - G-Max was their high-end. Note the lack of a hole on the side, which keeps it from falling until the water level is lower, thus sending more water to the bowl: But both of those 1.6gpf designs have been discontinued in favor of two 1.28gpf flush systems: E-Max (on most of the "Eco" models) and Double Cyclone (on most of the "II" models). Now here's where things get complicated - all of these seem to use a whole new range of flappers - a quick search turned up at least three new ones - THU253S, THU277S, and THU299S. Amongst the changes, most (all?) of these have added a float that sits above the flapper. I don't know if the float can be adjusted or removed - haven't seen one in person yet. There's a picture of the flapper from the Eco Drake, which I think uses the 277, on Terry's site: (here). To get an idea of the difference, look at the parts diagrams for the old 1.6 Drake and the new 1.28 Eco Drake. Now see the difference in part #6, the flapper? It does seem, as Terry noted, that the rest of the tank (and the bowl for that matter) haven't changed - compare the other part numbers. Maybe all you need to do to convert an Eco Drake into an old-style G-Max Drake is remove the float, or at least swap to the old flapper, although Terry says on his thread that the flush valve is different too. There was a 1.6gpf Double Cyclone in the lineup until recently (on the Neorest, Soiree, and Guinevere) - I can't find what flapper they used. This is way more than I ever wanted to know about toilet flappers....

We just installed a (skirted) Carlyle II on Friday, and after the initial 36 hours of use, I'm completely happy with it. Best flushing toilet I've ever had or used, even with the low water usage -- and no post-flush dripping noise. Since others have/have had that drip, I don't know whether that's a specific model, something in certain manufacturing runs, something in the installation or what; those comments I read here on the forum had made me a little wary of buying a Toto, but I decided that the positive comments so outweighed the few negative ones about the dripping noise that we'd give it a try. So... no guarantees, and your mileage may vary, but put me in the happy Toto campers list. I'll probably be ordering another one within a week as we finish bathroom #1 and start ordering materials for bathroom #2! -- Eric

MrsPete- The low-flow toilets that are now required to be sold use as little as 1/5 of the water as the old toilets we grew up with. To work well they depend on careful engineering of the trap so there is an efficient flush with this reduced amount of water. You can't tell by just looking at them, but some toilets do this better than others. For example the Toto has a somewhat larger trap diameter than many toilets and this makes a big difference in clogging or not. I used to think that all toilets did the same thing until I had experience installing and using a variety of brands. Some of the money you pay for expensive toilets can be a premium for the style rather than better operation, just like a lot of items around the house. I have bought the $99 toilets before: some were ok, some were terrible. I finally decided I was willing to pay several hundred dollars for something I could install and forget about for the next 40 years, rather than get a plunger out every couple of weeks. Read the review links in this thread and decide for yourself.

If you are building a bathroom from scratch, definitely -- I cannot emphasize this strongly enough -- make sure that it has a grounded electrical outlet within a foot or two of the toilet at baseboard level. WHEN (it is not a matter of "if") you find that you can no longer live without an advanced toilet seat (also known as a bidet seat or Washlet -- but Washlet is a trademark of Toto so other makers cannot use that word to designate their product), your cost of installation will be significantly reduced if the electrical outlet is readily available. In the meantime, you can have one of the electrical outlets with built-in sensor night-lights installed, which will enhance nighttime visits to the loo. The inevitability that you will be getting an advanced toilet seat also may influence your choice of toilet itself. Once you have yours, you will find yourself disquieted when you travel and visit most American hotels and have to do without the amenity. But you can always travel to Japan, where approximately 100 percent of hotel rooms and better than 70 percent of private residences (nearly 100 percent of newly constructed private residences) have advanced toilet seats on every toilet. There are probably more advanced toilet seats in use in Japan now than TV remote controls, and the remarkable thing is that the product category is only about three decades old. We have a Toto Vespin II with an Inax Clessence advanced toilet seat; we chose those two units after much research, and because we travel at least twice a year to Japan (many relatives), and could ask real people real questions about their real opinions. We have recommended the same combination to several friends in America, who have followed our recommendation, and have been delighted with the outcome.
