Paint Home Decorating Design Dilemma

Help pick paint color

We're finally getting to the end of our kitchen and dining area remodeling (as well as a small extension) and now it's time to pick paint colors and we could really use some help. Here's a rendering of the kitchen area:

Cabinets are in Navy Blue (SW Naval)
Countertop is Ijen Blue Quartzite
Floor is hardwood - Hickory Bristol Tavern
All appliances are "standard" stainless steel

We're looking for 2-3 colors. One as the primary color for our walls (probably on the lighter/whiter side). The other two for areas nearby - dining area, living room, possibly stairways (that could be a little darker). The doors and windows in the rendering are east-facing. For the primary color in the kitchen, we're looking at whites (leaning towards whites that have some gray such as Benjamin Moore Decorator's White). We also like BM Distant Gray. Any feedback on these or suggestions for alternative colors would be very helpful. What colors would go with those (ideally grays) that we could do in other rooms nearby?

Our architect is suggesting Benjamin Moore and the painter seems to have a preference for Sherwin Williams. Are they comparable or should we prefer one over the other?

Painters always want to use the paint with the biggest kick back it truly has nothing to do with quality . I do not like SW and IMO the painter uses the paint I tell them to use.As for color I have no clue as to the furnishings in the rest of the house , I see a lot of blue in the kitchen and I will warn you grays are difficult to get right with blue. I don't see many cabinets so I assume the whole back wall is window.Once the kitchen is in place post some pics that is the only way we can even hazard a guess as to color. The best is to get some large poster boards choose 2 shades of each color you like paint the boards, one for each color, with 2 coats and move them around where you think they work. BTW all your lighting being the same will help I happen to love LED 4000K all through my house .

That is a beautiful rug!! BM Manchester Tan is a good all around neutral. It has a very slight green undertone but is one of the most really neutral paint colors. A shade lighter is BM Feather Down. It still reads closer to beige than gray but is more of a greige mix. I have both these colors in my home. Not affiliated, but Maria Killam has good info. on paint colors. Whatever you go with, I would not pick gray. BM Manchester Tan BM Feather Down I know paint depends on lighting etc. and colors can appear different on monitors but on mine, these two photos are good representations of the colors. Looks like your couches have a pink undertone. If you wanted a lighter neutral with that same undertone good ones are: BM Muslin (similar to Manchester Tan but with slight pink undertone.) SW Patience BM Maritime White The only undertone I’d stay away from pink undertones couches is yellow/gold or orange.

It’s hard to give advise with that info. (Also just note the decorating forum or design dilemma would be better suited for this type of question. Paint is supposed to be for more technical stuff- what brushes and how tos.) Hardwood is neutral like a good pair of jeans. Do you have other furnishings? You need a plan before you can select paint colors. What are your hard finishes (countertops, other flooring, backsplash,..) the undertones are important in selecting color; especially neutrals. Hard finishes, furniture, rugs, that type of thing needs to come first. Paint should be one of the last things you select. I’m not affiliated but I suggest heading over to Maria Killam site and do some reading lots of good info. and I wish I would have found her site sooner before I made some of the choices I did in my house.

I find grays difficult and really don't like living in gray rooms. IMO Boothbay Bay gray is dark. You would also have to paint that gold wall Boothbay Gray. Your room doesn't lend itself to an accent wall because there isn't any on wall that flat without added corners. Plus why would you accent a wall that is hidden by the entertainment center. Why gray? You have gray furniture and rug.

Thank you both! I’ve looked up the Cloud White and done some further reading on undertones which helped clear things up a bit for me on what’s happening. The bulb suggestion is helpful too - I had no idea where to start. Patricia I’m with you on the flooring. I’d love to change the carpet (and ceiling and more) but this is my parents house. Our family business is directly tied to Broadway, which isn’t looking so hot and will probably remain that way till at the earliest spring of next year. In the meantime I’m privileged enough to be able to ride out the storm with them, living here, and the paint is a quick freshen up of my new temporary digs. None of us are ready to invest in a big project like flooring until we know what the future of our industry (and our income) looks like. But, in a perfect world, I’d have had the carpet gone before moving in :) I’ve attached a photo of the offending (really, it’s old basement classic bad) carpet in case it helps. The real answer is probably it won’t matter what color I go with, the carpet is the culprit and I’ll need to grin and bear it.
