Need help with Kitchen Layout
Comments (2)I'd suggest moving your prep sink so it was servicng the prep space associated with the range. You could put it on the corner closest to the range, rather than on the corner facing the fridge. It would give you better fridge-landing space, too, as well as move it out of the face of the seated diners. Having a prep sink closely allied with my hot-cooking prep area is, to me, the preferred association. All other demands for water can be accomodated at the clean up sink, including handwashing for non-cooks. For mid-prep handwashing (chicken-guts on your hands), I want a tap very close at hand. And I prefer not to use the one I also wash dishes at, to cut down on cross contamination. Water glasses are also commonly stored near the DW. Some people prefer to have a prep sink function more as a bar sink for drink service (coffee machine and booze), but if I needed that function, I'd have a third sink somewhere else if that couldn't be accomodated in the clean up zone. As for the desk: you've got it smack in the middle of the main action axis. Does how you use it warrant that placement? Meaning do you actually use a desk during cooking prep? (Maybe you use the internet or are a cookbook writer?) If instead you simply plan to use as an all-purpose household desk. command central or homework spot, I'd place it elsewhere to keep the focus on prep in that area. it would be a pain to have someone sitting at the desk when you need to get the pantry doors open to grab an ingredient in the midst of an intense cooking session. Comments (38)Tina, I bet you all can get the tile a lot cheaper than we can! The company is wonderful, they sent me a lot of free samples so I could choose my colors. We also have it in the entry way. We just love it! Marrilyn, I think we added about 650 sq. feet, which is the new room only. After being cramped in that tiny LR, we wanted SPACE, even though it's just my dh and myself now. lol. Here's the before picture I took at the end of last summer when I knew it would be "demolished." The wonderful memories of two little boys frolicking in the front yard makes me cry. :( From where I'm standing taking the picture, between me and the old house is the new room. Before: After, another picture below: Left side of porch, we added some rock to it that we used on our FP. Right side, still no porch furniture. :( Here's a picture taken a couple of months ago at the beginning of my "cottage garden" which is an interesting experiment. lol....See MoreLayout down to the nitty gritty. Comments (36)herbflavor, I hope your neighbour is okay! Yes this is our favourite of the two options listed at 11:40 (option a). It does require moving the existing window down 5 inches to the left which will add to the cost. However, I do like that everything is more spaced out so I am very glad you shared your comments about the space around the windows. I could consider bumping the regular oven or the microwave to the peninsula or elsewhere. However, the best spot for the steam oven is where it is due to the fact it has to be installed high up. I can't however, place the regular oven under the steam oven as it would take up a bit too much width for that run. Should I fuss with the oven locations more or be content that all the hot food appliances are together? Also, any thought on the open shelf vs the closed cupboard? If I keep it as an open shelf, what should I put on it? Thanks again for all your help. You advice has been very useful. sena01, Wow I bet your DW and your sister's is comfortable to load and unload. Ours will only be raised 3 inches, so will just be a little more comfortable than if it was not raised at all. I had not thought that we could further raise the DW to a higher level than the nearby sink, but I see that you did successfully. Thanks for sharing. Carol...See MoreMore updates in new house
Comments (21)I am so enjoying this too, Sueb! Living vicariously through your fun adventure here while recovering from some surgery I had a couple of weeks ago. It helps pass the time, especially when everything looks so darn good! I love everything, especially your bathroom, and also I would love to know the color of your pink office, Did you use the kohler memoirs fixtures in your bathroom? I replaced all of our toilets earlier this year with those and yours look very similar. Would love to get the pedestal sink too but in my case it involved tearing up the floor and that wasn't in the cards right now. But someday I'd love to do that; they look so nice together. Keep us posted and enjoy the ride:)...See MoreDebbie Downer
