short day onions up north?

Pretty clear why long-day onions don't do well down south. Not enough daylight hours to start bulbing. But what's the reason that short-day onions don't do well up north? Plenty of short days up north. There are many more options for sweet onions with short-day. Of course, they'd have to be an entirely winter crop up there, in order to trigger bulbing in, say, February, which might be uncomfortable for them?
