Should I install fan or vent in master closet? Skylight?
Comments (14)I'm curious to see what ventilation strategy for a home with no a/c, Sorry I can't be of help, we put a supply grill for a/c in closets & baths here. as far as the skylight goes there are good ones out there Vellux (I believe) has low e coatings which will filter out uv and heat and add light. the negative is that you are cutting a hole in your roof so proper install and flashing are a must. the install is the biggest problem I encounter with my clients and the installer of the skylight. even with a top notch install, it only delays the not if it will leak, but when. I would give this some thought... for less cost/worry than the skylight you could install more lights. There are qiute a few options that are energy efficient and will work well. although I'm not a fan of recessed lights..if you look at that as an option make sure that you get ICAT cans insulation contact air tight instead of the standard IC light. IC will allow hot air from attic and reduce the value of the insulation surrounding it in the attic. Buy ICAT and put cfl's if you go that route, best of luck....See MoreFront door is 80' tall & ceilings are 10', what height for
Comments (21)That transom is taller than 14" I feel sure. For reference, the mullions are either 7/8 or 1 1/8th or in that vicinity. Then you have a couple of inches at least of trim around the spider web to hold the glass before you get to the door trim. . . I would insist on a CAD drawing of your door before you purchase it to see how it will look. This is not the best picture of this house but it is one I love in Atlanta where we got the idea for the narrow french doors we have in our new house. The ceilings in this house are 10' I think and the french doors across the front (hidden by the boxwoods in this picture) are 8'. The front door is a good bit shorter - maybe even the 80" of your original thought. The transom is not a spiderweb, but a beautiful custom design that is not shown well in this picture. The foyer doesn't have flanking closets like you describe, but the rest of the house also has 8' doors . . . Comments (11)Those numbers are definitely gas. $2800 seems like a lot. Longevity is of course variable and paying more probably gets you greater longevity. I haven't looked in a while but Marathon sold ones that significantly outlasted average ones. The first question is what is your fuel? NG is cheap and Propane is not (well it is relatively cheap now but more variable). Next is - not sure where you heard that tankless is not good. I have my issues with tankless but they should be considered. I have one in a new rental townhome and the water takes a long time to get hot. That is an issue but doesn't have to be. Some of that is plumbing but some is the nature of tankless. But in general tankless is the goto for many. It is a lot cheaper than $2800 and gives you 96% typically. Third question is why not use electricity? Heat pump hot water heater makes sense in a lot of environments. But you need to have the room and sound isolation. Lastly, there is some value still for solar hot water if you are concerned about being a good steward for the environment. Best if you don't have room for heat pump hot water. It also will outlast a heat pump. We paid about $7k but got $5k in incentives so it was a minimal cost to us for a good 80 gal tank with install. When considering the options, I always think it is good to remember that gas can not be created in a renewable fashion but electricity can. Also many electric utilities offer rebates for highly efficient electric devices. Many would be surprised but there is a growing return to electric resistance type hot water heaters for this reason. Particularly POU devices that eliminate the wait (and waste) of distributing hot water. I am still trying to figure out Duke Energy's incentives but I think we may be going back to solar if the incentives are still there....See Moreshould I remove the closet doors for an office?
Comments (27)I would swing the study door out into the hallway instead of inward, which will get in the way of the closet doors. I have a little desk area inside a closet in my bedroom and I love it. It keeps me convenient to the action in the house and I can shut the doors when I'm not using the space. Eventually, I'll take over our oldest son's bedroom once he's officially out of the house but this works for the time being....See Morepalimpsest
