Need to remove some trees

I need to remove some trees in my yard, both small and large. The problem is the stumps if they are too large to dig up. I understand that it's bad for my chain saw to use it to cut the roots.

first off.. if you have acres .. why bother.. just apply a stump killer after you cut it flush to the ground.. and be done with it ... do you really need that exact spot to plant other things???

for DIY root removal ... get a sawzall with a tree blade.. start digging ... and try not to destroy the blade by getting lazy and not digging what you want to cut clear of dirt ...

trees are not lumber.. so get the right blade:

Being female, over 50, rather cheap and having already removed many many trees by myself, here is what I would do. #1 ask around and see if you have a friend or neighbor willing to loan you a ladder and a lopper. If they had some spare trash cans this would be a plus as well. I would use the loppers at the point closest to the maximum diameter the loppers can cut safely while you are on the ladder (have the friend help steady it). This should get the top of the tree down. If the tree is taller and thicker than you can cut with the loppers, move to the next step. Next, I would use the loppers to remove all the branches you can reach for the next section, once again safely with some one steadying the ladder. This should leave you a rather odd looking main truck that you can now use the bow saw to cut off in safe sections removing the branches as you go The branches could be cut up and used as mulch or put in those trashcans to transport through the house. Once you only have a stump left, you could put a level line on it and cut there and use as "decor" or start digging out roots. Trust me, "decor" starts looking pretty good about this point especially if you only have a bow saw. Over there there are products that will kill stumps or so they claim. Not sure what your options are over there, but that fresh cut will be sucking in any herbicide you might want to use. I would also wrap with a black plastic trash bag or two and try to seal it off from light and hope it dies rather than dig. I hesitate to use salt or vinegar because I do not want to ruin the soil too. Using gas and a match will probably land you on the front page of a few news stories...............

Admittedly, I will not persuade you, either. However....coppicing the right tree at the right time the right way can produce "something" that works in the garden. (a short bushy shrub-like tree with big leaves) not to be confused with topping ...the particular kind of mutilation practiced on tall things beneath power lines Or pollarding, as in trees on some European boulevards. This my opinion only, but those are butt-ugly man-made trees. However, they are specific to particular geo-cultural environments and I bet they elicit some warm feelings when ex-pats see them after a long absence from the motherland.

i had quite a few large ones taken out of my woods by a guy who makes cedar chests. he did not pay me nor did i pay him. he was glad to have the wood for his craft and i am glad to have a more open woodland area in which to plant. you could advertise locally for a similar deal. not sure about using it as firewood. seems like i heard it is so resinous that it pops/sparks heavily and the residue can accumulate in your chimney worse than other types of wood but don't hold me to that.

There is no reason besides impressing the Joneses or maybe yourself to have a stump removed. Unless you do a crazy amouny of location renovation it is very unlikely you can plan right where the stump was.

I'm kickin myself for cutting two 18 and another 12 inch diameter Ash trunks down soo low as they're useless to tie hammocks to.

Cool then. If you've thoughy about them for a bit and have no use for stumps or poles then remove em.

Cut them flat to the ground or or have it ground I guess. If its less than 8 inches across Ibmight sawzall it as for some reason I have more control with that than my Stihl.

In neighborhood settings I'd probably call the call before you dig number before having it ground. Lord forbid some old Centurytel line circles the area and they come recollecting on you.

My property had been cut over by loggers 20 years ago; most of the stumps are from then. The loggers were only interested in hardwoods, so there are/were many pines left; the land was purchased from the logging company by a developer who planned for 12 building sites and cut down many of the remaining conifers; the developers' permit was denied, so. I bought most of that land and built my house on the one permitted home site. It's the stumps now in my yard which I would like to remove. Thanks for the Sawzall suggestion!
