Narrow Kitchen Island Conundrum
Strange to do seating for only one at the end of a narrow (appx 24”) kitchen island?
I’m remodeling our kitchen. My interior designer suggested that i build out the island completely and add more shelving below, but i disagree and simply don’t like how that would look aesthetically.
I also don’t want to shorten the island and lose space. We have one daughter and I wanted to get some opinions on whether a single, really classy bar stool/chair for one only would simply be too weird. I know it’s my house, and I should ultimately do what I want, but would love to hear some opinions. Thanks so much, other suggestions are also greatly appreciated!

Comments (14)Here are more pics of a narrow island. I love this idea, of the skinny island. Think of it--it's essentially a galley kitchen w/ no upper wall on one side. It would still be very useful. Aptosca's comments about hers: So far I love the island the best. I never had one before. We got reduced size cabinets (18"W) so I could have an island. The island measurements are 21"W x 75.5"L. I know that sounds small on paper, but it is a great workspace. I use it constantly. I store all my appliances underneath and it will be my prep area. I do love the red garnet in the VB granite too. When the sun from the skylights fall on the island it sparkles. I love it! I think the 8-feet part would be hard. I'd be tempted to break it into two islands, so I didn't have to walk around it every time. Comments (6)Just wanted to put in my sister's experience since she has a custom-built island on wheels. Her kitchen is small and L-shaped, so she wanted the moveable island for times when she and her husband work together (they cook large dinners for a gourmet cooking club). She keeps it pushed out of the way most of the time. She also likes the extra storage (I think hers is 2' x 3' or so) One thing she goofed on, though -- she forgot to take into account the height of the wheels. Her wheels are big and heavy duty -- maybe 4" diameter. So the island rolls easily and brakes securely, but it's too tall to be a comfortable work surface...she says they don't use it as much as they could if it was true counter height...they really can't use it for cutting, rolling dough, etc. But they do roll it to their LR/DR for an extra serving surface. She has a wall she can roll it against when not in use...but what about you, where would you move this island?...See MoreIsland style conundrum
Comments (12)I really appreciate all the feedback. Yes, it's true that my natural preference is a single slab island. But the issue isn't my architect-- he has an opinion (and usually incredible taste and guidance) but he won't try to force me to do something I don't want. I really posted the ad because even though I think I could come up with the rational pros/cons list, I don't really know-- I have never had a two-tier. So does anyone have one and feel kind of closed in, cut off from the rest of the party? Is the bar height really a drag with kids? (MIne are 4 and 6 so not tiny). We have a lot of other table top space so I don't really need it for wrapping gifts or projects (though I'm kind of psyched about imagining drying pounds of fresh pasta on the counter...) Would it be really awesome to have the wood area for serving and lower stress given the marble counters? The island with part stone/part wood on the same level isn't really my style, though I could imagine a large walnut cutting board, as remodelfla suggested). To answer some questions: The dining table is in place already and my designer says that she included it on the plan as it stands now. I haven't double-checked those measurements though. It works fine as-is and the chairs do not hit the wall but it is a bit tight. Excellent point about the turkey dinner! I could approach an open dishwasher from the side if necessary but not so with an oven. I will point this out to the designer. What is the issue with the spacing between the sink and the stove, cpartist? The idea of an island on casters may be my only option but really the point of the island was for seating more than workspace. We did an alternate design with a peninsula but I didn't like how the peninsula seating was back-to-back with the dining room seating. 2 years agoWe did the overhang with seating for one on our narrow island. It’s a 15 inch overhang to which we added decorative corbels. I decided against legs because the space would be just too narrow. I chose the narrowest stool I could find to tuck out of the way without becoming a tripping hazard.

I would get rid of the island, use whatever space the table is taking up and then design a countertop island which seats 8...which you probably can do with a 4' square counter. Use upper cabinets to make a pedestal support for the island. It will give you extra storage for all those things you use only once in awhile.

2 years agoWe might suggest looking at moving the cook top to another place, as it looks like an unfortunate place for it. We think the one stool is no issue, however you might want to look into having legs added to the island, like you'll see in our first image. Please also notice where the cook tops are in our designs included below.
