Have you tried 'flattening' your Macrophylla over winter?

That time of year again, and I'm trying to step up my winterization game a notch to see if I can get my one Macrophylla 'Blaumeise' to finally bloom next year.

Was all prepared to cage and fill with leaves, but then I read one person who said that they'd basically pulled the branches down and essentially flattened the plant. Then covered with leaves. They said it worked great, and it sprung back up in spring and flowered great. But I couldn't find anyone else mentioning that method.

last year I buried with leaves up to about 18" and the only part that had live growth in spring was the part under the leaves. So it seems that this approach could work. And it might be more sustainable because this is a pretty big hydrangea and caging is going to be a fair bit of a project (t-posts, etc) and have associated costs - neither of which I'm a fan of. And I have room to flatten it down since it's surrounded by small die-to-ground perennials.

Just wondering if anyone's tried this approach?
