Closet design - show me yours!
Comments (4)There was a great thread on this a few months back. Some of the photos don't come up anymore but the ones that are still up....some great ideas. I didn't do anything fancy. Just a few shoe shelves, some shelves for sweaters and the rest hanging. After revisiting these photos though, I wish we'd done more. Here is a link that might be useful: Closet thread...See MorePlease show me your master br custom closets!
Comments (3)Also there are a lot of books on closets and storage. You can browse in the bookstore if you don't want to purchase. In addition to listing all the types of clothing and accessories you want to store, so as to identify what size and shape and placement in the closet, take some time to think about how you get dressed and undressed and what you do with clothes, pj's, robes, shoes, etc. Put another way, where will your "dressing area" be--will it be the closet, or an area in the bath, or the bedroom? Do you like to stalk directly from the shower into your closet and pick out stuff to wear and actually get dressed in the closet, or do you drag items out to the bed, or what? Where's your full length mirror? Thinking through those time & motion issues can help you design something that works with you and not against you. Same for laundry hamper location. My DH and I are big on "hooks" for "gently worn" clothes. You might search for previous threads on hooks. So my dream closet and/or dressing area includes a way to get out of and hang up work suit, for example, and change into either spanking clean clothes or into yesterday's khaki's that I will wear again today. I keep partially-worn items on hooks. You may decide that that IS what the chair in the bedroom is for, or you may want to design it into the new system. Think also about unloading pockets or bag or briefcase--I unload cell phone, pager, other stuff into an area downstairs, and some folks use kitchen or mudroom, but in some closet designs, you might have a landing zone for this kind of stuff, including charger station. Regardless, it can be good to have some little area for unexpected stuff from pockets. Our brightest light and mirror set-up is in the bathroom, so I ended up using 2 of our bathroom counter drawers for jewelry and some accessories and purses. I don't really wear a lot or often, but when I do, it turns out to be most convenient and easiest to coordinate an outfit right there--final check to see that I am all zipped, put on lipstick and hmm, pearls ? gold? something wild? I have entered that need-brighter-light age range, so I tend to use and enjoy these items more if I can see them well! Someone else might instead have a nice antique dressing table and mirror in the bedroom, but I like WATTAGE. Also--put shoes up at eye level or a bit above. Not on floor. Plan enough shoe storage or whittle down your supply, or both!...See MoreShow me your narrow, deep closets please!
Comments (4)I have a narrow deep, deep closet. I step into it. And I have shallow stuff stored along the wall that I stand beside, plus deep-ish shelves along the short back wall, and partial hanging stuff in front of them. I have pics somewhere, but I'm not sure if it helps. But my vote would be to put deep-ish (18" or so) shelves across the back (so you can slide in a Rubbermaid-style storage bin, end in, like a drawer, and then put 4"-deep shelves on the side wall or walls. You'd be amazed when you can store in 4" of depth. Esp. if the shelves are relatively closely spaced. And leave a section of that side wall blank for hooks. Best is probably to leave the middle free of most stuff, so the bins on the shelves can be pulled out, and keep any side-wall shelves, etc., on the front half of the closet, JUST inside the door frame. For a quick-and-dirty trial of this, maybe get shoe-pocket organizers and hang them on the side walls. You can slip Windex, dust cloths, boxes of garbage bags, etc., in those pockets if you get one w/ generous-sized pockets....See Moreshow me your kitchen broom closet!
Comments (17)Love your cabinets and what a deal. I love the re-store store! In our last house we had a tiny kitchen, but managed to modify a pantry to have pullouts plus a six inch space for broom closet along one side. I know a lot of people would say that's not enough space, but it was plenty for a broom, swiffer and a hand vac. You will love this space. If you order a cabinet, a face frame will narrow the space, though. You will likely also be limited on heights available. You could probably just make this cabinet with 3/4 panels if you want to go to the floor and order your doors separately. We used a 3/4 panel in this way and used angle brackets on the floor and ceiling (at the top ours was also attach to another wall cabinet, though.). The angle brackets on the floor were tiled over since we went down to the subfloor. The ones at top were hidden behind our frig. I think trimming it to the ceiling would look best and maybe find a way to bridge the top of your frig. It will link the two sides visually and give the frig a more built in space. Even if you just put a nice straight line valance with a plain bead at top like your cabs, stained to match, you would get that finished look. We had a cabinet bridging that space. Whatever you use, there may still be that little bit of space to slide a cookie sheet on top of the frig. That's what we did--we used every square inch! Now I'm planning our last dream house kitchen and I'm still wanting to use every last bit of space well. Hate those fillers unless they pull out :) Isn't it fun to find a use for the little spaces that others would just use filler of leave an empty space on the other end?!...See MorePatty
