Pendants vs No Pendants for our kitchen...help?

last modified: 3 years ago

We've lived in our remodel nearly two years and finally getting around to the final touches. I'd planned to hang three 8" milk globe pendants over the kitchen island, in part because I am very light sensitive and wish to have a break from all our recessed lighting, especially during dinner (I literally wear a hat most meals to block the glare). I really love the light from old-school globe pendants.

But now I'm seesawing. Despite our usual cluttered existence (see real-life photo), I do enjoy seeing my floating walnut shelves and wonder whether pendants would block that view and just add to the clutter in the space. I'd love to do the Photoshop thing to see how they'll actually look before we bring in an electrician, but I'm not real savvy with the tech stuff (anyone??).

On a technical note, the pendants I bought are listed for "dry location", and they will be hung over our induction cooktop. We are in coastal SoCal and usually have our adjacent sliding doors open while cooking, but still. Would steam be an issue for the lights? (No, we don't have a vent hood—try not to freak out.)

Thoughts? Thanks, and here are two photos, the first almost-Instagram worthy, the second...Real Life Clutter! LOL. (The pendants would be hung from those three white discs in the second photo.)

the three white discs on the ceiling mark the potential pendant install spots:

Below is the look I was originally going for (these are Kira 8" globe pendants) back when I was delusional and thought we could ever keep a kitchen free of clutter!

BTW, our backsplash is being installed next week!
