Should I do any glass uppers?
Comments (26)My kitchen is similar to your goal: white cabs, marble countertop / backsplash, etc., and one thing I often wish I'd done differently is having more glass doors. Yeah, we can always have the doors changed but before I spend another penny on that kitchen every other project in this house better be done! Here's my wall of white: It's lovely and incredibly functional, but I think glass uppers would help break up all the white. But sometimes I like how simple it is ... no pleasing some people! Plus, I'd have to clean out the messy top shelves if I had glass. Hmm. I'm also conflicted about the glass cabs we do have: I love a door with mullions (or is it muntins?) but I hate when those mullions / muntins block the view of the decorative pieces. So we had ours without mullions / muntins because we knew what would be going in those cabs and I wanted to see those objets in all their glory. That being said, I still love a glass door with mullions / muntins! I am esp. gaga for the wood which arcs like back-to-back or interlocking Cs ... yummy. (mamadadapaige has some stunning examples in her collection) I want to weep at how empty the countertops are in this photo -- I can barely recall what the marble looks like nowadays....See MoreHm - corner wall cabinets over 30" depth counter...
Comments (14)live_wire_oak - we had not considered a set up like this, but I think to our detriment! I just made a new mockup and DH really liked it. It makes the work triangle much better and keeps the kids out of the hot zone when they're setting the table or grabbing a snack. And we can do the 30" counters on the stove/ref/oven wall (and my oven and cooktop are finally reunited!). We aren't island-seating people, and prefer to have the island as workspace, without a prep sink, but even losing the second sink this seems like a much more workable design. The only downside might be that we're opening the pantry door into the window, but with the Ikea pantries I know there are ways to configure the doors so that maybe we have an open shelf at window height, and doors below and above or something. I have a worktable in the design now but can make that an island with cabinets if we need the additional storage...need to mark up my design. :) Thanks!! Comments (69)Lisa - two KD people that I have spoken to said that the voided corner does not provide wider drawers on either side. What am I missing? Nothing as far as I can tell because what they are telling you makes no sense to me at all. If you don't give up 12" of linear space to a Susan, you gain 9" of drawer width (3" goes to spacer at corner). I considered adding a BCC to my sink corner (didn't have space on sink side to do corner Susan) but opted not to because a) it wasn't the right kind of storage for that corner and b) a drawer base was cheaper storage than a BCC. Here's my corner. Drawers & trash pull-outs open. If I had done a BCC, I would have lost the bank of drawers on the right. If I'd had room for a corner Susan, I would have lost 27" of much needed drawer storage. The few items that I would have been able to store in a BCC (ditto for a corner Susan) ended up in a a single drawer in a much roomier cab next to my wall oven. I use the items in the drawers in my prep zone much more regularly than the items I use in the drawer by my oven. A few extra steps now and then is a much better option than extra steps several times a day, IMO. Look at the whole picture when it comes to storage. What you decide for one area affects storage in another. It's a domino effect, IME....See MoreFaucet location for d shaped sink in corner cabinet
Comments (2)It should be in a corner. It will be quite a stretch to reach if not in a corner and they look best there. I have used one and being right handed, it worked best in the left hand corner. There are plenty of pictures on the internet with this setup....See MorePaul F.
