Recommendation for tree nursery

I know they're probably not called "tree nurseries", but you know what I mean ;-P

I'm in zone 7A; foothills of western North Carolina.

I'm clearing off a bit of land with the hopes of planting some apple, peach, chestnut, and Pawnee pecan trees. Maybe some others. If I plant them 20' apart then I can realistically do 15-20 trees.

Can you all recommend somewhere reliable to order established trees? The older the better, really; I hate the thought of them not bearing fruit for 10-15 years.

My budget is $1,000, but I can be a little flexible for more established or higher quality trees. I'll be doing the planting, of course.

I have a nearby nursery (maybe 30 minutes away) but they had no interest in getting what I wanted, just pushing what they had on me (they almost pushed me in to a chestnut tree that doesn't actually have chestnuts!). They kind of soured me on dealing with them.

In your climate peaches and apples will need lots of spraying there are lower maitenance fruits like fig, paw paw, persimmon, muscad muscadine, asian pear, mulberry. try edible landscaping in virginia they have a good reputation

Do you mean spraying for insects? I used to have NO luck growing tomatoes due to insects, but I started growing hot peppers (I eat a ton of them) and began mixing one of those up with soap and water to spray on the tomatoes. Now I have NO insect problems! I know that the trees would take a lot more, but I'll have a lot more room to grow the peppers so I'm willing to try.

I'm not a fan of paw paws, persimmon, mulberry, or (blech!) muscadine, so I'm trying to grow some things I'd actually eat :-)

oldryder I'm with fruitnut on your trees. Try putting down a 2-3" layer of well composted manure two weeks before last threat of frost. I bet that will wake them up. As far as the location of the nursery is concerned it many or may not matter as most get their trees from wholesalers. Its more important that you are buying varieties that are well suited to your zone with a proper rootstock for your soil and buying from reputable nurseries. St. Lawrence Nurseries is one of the few nurseries that grows all of its own trees in your zone but they are done taking orders for the season. I've always had a good experience at the Boething Treeland nursery in Woodland Hills - www.boethingtreeland.com They have an incredible selection of trees available in sizes from 5 gallon pots to boxes that need a crane to lift them! Most importantly, they have a very knowledgeable staff, who'll make sure you select a tree compatible with your site, and an experienced delivery crew who can also plant your specimen (highly recommended if you go with a larger box size). If you're interested in fruit trees, general landscaping plants and possibly the best rose selection in the area, it's well worth a drive to Otto and Sons in Fillmore - www.ottoandsons-nursery.com They're a wholesale nursery, and not open to the public all the time, so make sure you check with them first before you visit. I've grown Papayas of all kinds of varieties from seeds I've gotten out of papayas from Walmart, and fruit stands. Every type I've planted here has done great and I've always gotten fruit within the first year. Anyways, there are 2 nurseries here on 49th st. in st. pete, one is called Willow Tree, the other is Carrol Brothers. Last time I was in they both had large citrus trees and I'm sure they will deliver. Also, Home Depot and Lowes usually have large citrus trees. I hate to say it, but those places might have the best trees at the cheapest prices. They also might be the most healthy because of the fast turnover rate.

Yes that company has a good reputation for quality plants. you not only have to spray for insects but fungus as well.

I have learned to buy trees from a reputable nursery in my same ag zone. Also at least for apples you want to pay attention to rootstock. Apples on dwarf rootstock will bear in 2-3 years, semi-dwarf in 3-5, and standard rootstock in 7,8, or even 10 years.
