Broadcast Spreader Questionnaire

Hello! My name is Jack. Currently, I am a senior in high school and am taking a class called Engineering Design and Development. For this class, groups of students must define a problem and then create a functioning solution to address it. Our group has found that walk-behind broadcast spreaders distribute fertilizer and grass seed with inconsistent rates due to varying walking speeds, the shape of the walking path, and the amount of overlap between passes. Our goal is to create a solution that distributes fertilizer or grass seed evenly with the use of a broadcast spreader.

A lot of us will use the settings as a guide, not a promise. You can calibrate yours, but know that you have to calibrate it for every product. All the products flow differently so learn to do this. Start by setting where you think it should be. Pour a measured amount (1 pound) into the spreader. Measure off 1,000 square feet and start spreading. Before you have covered half the area or dumped half the product you should have a good idea how well the spreader is doing. Make an adjustment and try again. When I first spread corn gluten meal with a drop spreader, I ended up opening it all the way and going over the area twice just to get 15 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Now I spread it by hand, but I would not try that with chemical ferts.

I prefer a broadcast, but if you have a lot of gardens and narrow areas a drop spreader might work better for you. Scott's makes one with an edge guard that works pretty well keeping seeds from flying out the side. Nothing wrong with a drop spreader however, so use whatever you prefer.

Thanks for the insight..... So..stopped in a local landscape supply house and they carry a spreader there Fetilome Ev-N-Spread 40# capacity.... Model 2000VPG looks fine for my needs, but I can't find anything on this spreader of detail... several searches seem to point to the Earthway site and their model 2000 Is this the same spreader just re-branded? Has 9" pneumatic tires, powder coated frame, etc. etc anyone by chance have insight on this? Thanks

Whether to use a drop spreader or a broadcast spreader depends as much on how much territory needs to be covered as what the material to be dispensed is. A drop spreader might not produce as much dust, but when I have used one for limestone there is at least enough to cover my feet while I've not had any dust, on me, from the limestone when using a broadcast spreader, but then my broadcast spreader pulls behind the tractor. A walk behind broadcast spreader may be different. A drop spreader will cover much less territory per trip then a broadcast spreader will.
