How can I get more privacy from this window?
Hi everyone,
I have a big window 10 feet wide by 12 foot tall that faces North and shows the neighbor's house. The room with that window is on top of the garage. During the summer, I don't see much of the neighbor's house and it's quite nice. The problem comes with the Fall when the leaves fall. There are no leaves in the trees from roughly mid-October to late-April here. I live in Quebec, Canada. Zone 4-ish.
I'm wondering if any of you have ideas on how we could achieve more privacy between the heat pump on the left and the big evergreen on the right? I planted a small hemlock, but I'd rather not wait 20 years to have privacy...
Red square is the privacy I'd want. Blue line is our property line.
I contacted some nurseries that carry large evergreens, but it seems like planting enough 14-20 feet tall evergreens would cost between $CAD 8K to 15K. That's a bit steep and I'd like to explore cheaper options.
Another option I was thinking about was getting something like 20 yards of dirt delivered to raise the ground and plant 6-8 feet tall evergreens (much cheaper) on top...
Can anyone help?

How can I add more privacy to this fence
Comments (7)Well my Carefree Wonders were 2 years old last year so this year they are on their 3rd year in that location and last year they were getting as high as the lattice by the end of last summer but they seemed to have to be staked in the ground as they started to lean or slip open with any kinda rain. My Knockouts seem to hold themselves up better.. Love the Carefree Wonders flower though.. The Carefree Wonders get morning shade from the fence and afternoon sun. I was looking for more privacy by the patio where the 6 foot fence is. Something that goes to 6 ft is fine.. I might want to carry some of the pink roses down the post and rail end also but more towards the patio I wanted more privacy..We had to move our Susan or Ann Magnolia bush last year so we choose to put it at the end of the simi private fence and are planning to redo the flower bed there to incoporate that bush into the bed and making it alittle wider out...We thought of looking into once of those patio arbor/pagoda things that you can have a patio with chairs under off our now patio in front of the fountain but not sure that will be in this years budget. Comments (20)More on what Jim Mat said, If you don't water your plants as much there will be less available nitrogen in the soil (which should in theory encourage more flowering if you have too much nitrogen, as long as you have enough phosphorus and the other nutrients needed for flowering). Adding extra phosphorus and potassium might help, but I think it depends on how much is in your soil already. Potassium and nitrogen do compete with each other, but that doesn't necessarily mean adding more potassium will help. It might, though. Phosphorus generally encourages blooms, but your phosphorus may or not already be sufficient. I doubt it would hurt unless you overdo it, though. If your plants are soft and pliable, or if they break easily, then adding potassium shouldn't hurt. Comments (2)Google privacy films appliques and you will come up with a ton of options. The combination of the obscure glass and the film should be more than enough. Comments (2)These plants are slow growers. They grow into a pile and then the pile spills over the sides eventually. They require a lot more sunlight then typical succulents and they like it warm. I have mine in a south facing window on a second floor. You can see new pearls budding and growing upwards toward the sun. It's quite lovely. :) The thing with the soil is that you want it to completely dry out before watering. Don't water these until the pearls start to pucker. Next time you repot, use a succulent/cactus mix with course sand or perlite mixed in. You can also try mixing your indoor potting soil with some course sand or perlite...maybe 60/40 mix. Also, I recommend terracotta pots because they wick the excess moisture away. Good luck and have fun with your pearls....See Moreplantkiller_il_5

2 years agolast modified: 2 years ago@ken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5 The small one on the right is an Eastern Hemlock that I just planted a month ago. The 3 other ones are from 5 feet tall to 7 feet tall are what I think are native Balsam Firs.
We have way more driveway space than required!
You are right we have not been in this house for a year yet.

2 years agoIf you built a screen close to the property line so it's behind the conifer trees, it looks like it would benefit from the slight rise in the elevation there. Something like this could work; depending on zoning in your area, you can likely build taller than the height limit for fences.
