Comments (12)sharon: That's not a very grower friendly looking climate. Worse than here at 4500ft and we have spring freeze injury most years. Things in Duncan are going to be pushed into bloom by warm spring days and then get frozen at night. My suggestions for fruiting plants would be jujube, pomegranate, and possibly persimmon. You could grow stone fruit but without a shelter February to April freezes would get you most years If there is a grapefruit in Clifton (3500ft elev) it must be up on a hillside. Hillsides or terraces above the valley are the best spots in AZ. At night cold air drains to the low spots. Below is a comparison of Jerome AZ to Duncan. Jerome sets on a mountain at about 5200ft elev over in central AZ. Jerome is colder day and night all year long due to higher elevation. But check out the record lows. Jerome has a two month longer growing season because of it's superb air drainage Personally I'd get out of a drunken town in AZ ASAP. Or at least never drive at night. Rural NM and AZ have a bad drinking issue. Here is a link that might be useful: Ducan vs Jerome AZ climate...See MoreFirst Nursery Trip of the Year Today.
Comments (12)Jean- They only have the very early stuff out at the nurseries like the pansies, violas, columbines and other really cool weather plants. Stuff like Salvias and most of the common bedding perennials are not stocked yet as it is just too early to plant. Oh, and I love verbena. I want to get some later. Kay- I am not very inspired to do anything unusual with that new gardenbed. I did put lilies at the two ends last year and this spring got the idea to plant columbines toward the back. Then I thought it would look good planted in the violas for lots of color. You can blame your violas for that. They just look so good I had to buy some of my own. The two bowls both have purple violas in them but they are slightly different from the one bowl to the other. I liked them both. I had two viola bowls on my kitchen stoop all last summer and I really liked them so I decided to get viola bowls again. The ones I had died over the winter, just like all the violas in the ground died too....See MoreLogee's trip this Saturday! All welcome to join
Comments (74)Mike B, it could be safe to zone 6, but if you do decide to put it outside, make sure that it's in a wind protected spot - and, maybe wrap it in burlap, and mulch well the roots before the frost hits. I know what you mean - most of the plants I've bought have been tiny. I personally don't mind this since I'm so space deprived. All the citris I've bought, I've been contemplating bonsai'ing to keep them to smaller pots, and fitted to my window space. congratulations on the keffir lime though. I think I saw one of those at Meyer Mike's and it has the nicest smelling leaves when you sacrifice one and sniff at it. The variegated gardenia - mine's still not bloomed and I bought it with a bud. It's a complete tease. I held off transplanting it into a better pot because of that bud - and yet, still ... small pot - no action. that small pot it's in means I have to water it every 3 days. If you haven't picked up the African gardenia - that should be your next splurge. It's blooming weekly. this month - new buds every few days. and voila! they open. And, the smell on one flower is light - but as more open - last night I came home and the scent in my apartment was really intoxicating. Next time we plan a Logees trip, you should join us there. :) A good time was had by all. :) -Rose...See MoreIf you can't live without it - buy it!
Comments (16)Oh gosh, Lucky, those are so pretty! I really like how you have them displayed on the silver tray, too. The prices for those tea cups & saucers is wonderful. I don't recall ever seeing them before but love the pattern. I live in a rural area, too. I'm about a half an hour north of Albuquerque and about 40 minutes south of Santa Fe. so everything is a drive for me. But, both cities do have tons of great shopping, etc., so I can't complain. I was born and raised in the suburbs in Michigan, and thought I'd never want to live in the country. It took me a while to get used to all the quiet and open space, but now I wouldn't change it at all! Jane, I think you WOULD have a great business doing that! I've never been to NYC and, although I'm anxious to go someday soon, I'm petrified at the thought of trying to get around in such a huge, crowded city! And, I used to work in downtown Detroit, so I am (was) used to large cities. I've told DH that when we do go, I want to hire a private guide to show us around . . . and so we don't get lost! My friend did that and had the best first time visit there. Lynn...See Morestupidlazydog CT zone 5b/6a
