Painters using red nail hole filler

My in laws and us are building houses on our land. Their house is further along than ours so I'm learning the process from it. The interior painters are prepping right now and yesterday there were red smears all over their cabinetry and trim. Seems they are using a red filler for nail holes and cracks. Does any one know what the material is? And will it dissappear well with priming and painting?

Hard to tell what they were using, but I've used a spackle that is pink on application and dries to white - the color change lets you know when it's ready to sand and paint.

Some of the areas were dry I'm sure. They were working 2 rooms away from the kitchen and everything in the kitchen was still deep red. I might try to get a pic later today. I'm mainly interested to see if it's a pro trick that I can start using when I paint. I think they were also brushing on a liquid sander to prep the or paint, seems a lot of pros do something like that to help the paint bond.

Glenn - the parquet itself is very thin, seems like someone did an uneven sanding job at some point. It's as little as 1/8" thick in some spots, up to about 3/8" in others. The main floor itself is 3/4" tongue and groove with no subfloor - just directly nailed to the joists. When I get to refinishing these (hopefully next weekend) I'll be sanding the parquet with a hand held random orbital and with normal sandpaper - even with the big random orbitals, I'm worried about removing too much material on the parquet - the center will be sanded with a rented random orbital. Many painters like using Bondo. Some have problems getting it to take a primer. Still, you can't beat the product for use on damaged wood. Once it is cured, it is hard, but can be sanded. Using any putty or spackling would probably crack over time, so yes Bondo works great.

If they used the right fasteners water will not hurt anything. As wood filler goes, or even caulk for that matter they don't work well on decks. Like your contractor said wood filler does not “stain” well to match the deck finish. In addition the major issue with using wood filler on decks or wood outdoors is stability...Color matching fillers they're not stable and they always end up cracking or breaking out of the voids, especially when you have 4 season climate changes, and during winter they freeze and thaw and fail quick.

Instead of painting your siding, have you consider CWF or some other semi-clear stain? Your cedar would naturally age over time and turn a darker color and the side that gets the most sun wouldn't age exactly like the rest of the house but it would be a more natural cedar look. Are the nails galvanized or will they rust? If they're not galvanized, you should probably cover them even if its just with a clear spray paint. Edited to add: follow your inspector's advise. GET OTHER PAINTER'S ESTIMATES THAT INCLUDE PREP. Consider covering the nails a DIY project.

Some use a glazing putty made for auto body work. Multiple brands, and a bit of web searching will find more info.

Was just going to say it was probably Bondo which my guy used.

All the painter's boss has to say is, "Make sure you sand the red spots."

Ah OK, bondo makes sense. Non shrinking, sandable, and dries hard. Thanks for the answers!

Bondo is a brand name but usually refers to a two part product that is used for filling large cracks/dents/damage in auto body work, and sometimes woodwork, but would not normally be used for filling nail holes. The glazing putty shown above is a different product and used to fill tiny imperfections remaining after the bondo has been sanded.

its like a tint they mix with gap filler. so that when they need to touch up they can go straight to where it is as it stands out. its also so when they start sanding they can see the high and low points to know whether it needs more sanding or filling. my painter just used it to. just gap filler and they mix in a tint.
