Comments (11)A combo of three types of shrubs in clumps, two evergreen and two blooming. For evergreens, look at small rhodies like the smallest PJM cultivar, 'Checkmate' which in 10 years in my garden has remained at 3' in all directions, one of the smaller coniferous evergreens such as a slow-growing or small Thuja or Chamaecyparis. There are small Kalmia/Mountain Laurel cultivars which will be a bit more $ in general. Deciduous shrubs could include plants such as the smaller red-twigged dogwood cultivars like 'Kelseyii' or smaller Hydrangea paniculata including 'Bobo' or early 'Quickfire' or even one of the 3'-4' spiraeas which have flowers, some have blue or gold summer foliage, and many have autumn color. Fothergilla 'Mount Airy' hasn't exceeded 4' in my garden in 10+ years, and it has early spring flowers along with stunning late fall color. Underplanted with an attractive groundcover like Veronica 'Georgia Blue' or Carex 'Ice Dance' or Geranium 'Biokovo' or for a bit more money, hakone grass AKA Japanese forest grass, it would have all season interest but be low maintenance and be a bit more interesting than builder grade without looking out of place. I think everything I recommended will be fine in morning sun followed by the kind of bright shade that a light wall but nothing overhanging provides. Good on you for trying to introduce some interest to a boring wall! PS - addition shade for annual gatherings can be provided by pop ups or tents if needed, and as trees grow, they can add to that. Just sayin' . . . I still think one taller plant set off center would really help ground that building. Consider a flowering dogwood, one of the midsized crabs that retains its fruit, or something like a basswood, hornbeam, or hophornbeam....See MoreI have a large blank wall in my family room. Help!
Comments (2)Pretty room. Can you post a pic taken from the corner pointed at the bare wall and the french door wall? Without seeing the whole space, properly hung art is always a good choice. Perhaps a console table. A large floor vase with tall filler is also a good way to add interest to a bare wall....See MoreDesign Help, large blank tall wall in living room
Comments (12)I really like your remodel. love the kitchen cabinet color. One idea for that long tall wall is to perhaps add a tall cabinet to the left of the sofa, possibly an open bookcase or a tall closed cabinet, depending on if you need storage or perhaps a place to show some of your treasures you might have or books, a large piece of art above the sofa and then to the right a side table with a tall floor lamp. the floor lamp will balance off the tall cabinet on the left and the sofa and art above will connect the middle part of the wall to the two ends. a few ideas on tall cabinets.......See MoreNeed help on big blank wall
Comments (13)I think the secretary (not a china cabinet) is doing a good job as a visual counter balance to the fireplace at the other end of the room. All the extra knee knockers and chairs should be removed. Use the tiered table in the corner. Indulge in some real flowers on it at this extended holiday time. Add a lower version of that to the table top. Spend some money on rewiring the room for a new chandy to hang 30-36" above the table. Center the table and the secretary with the fireplace, and center a linear chandy over the table. Then spend the big bucks to add a rug 36" larger than your table top all around. Style the bookcases flanking the fireplace with 1/3 books (standing, lying, leaning or stacked,) 1/3 large decor items that can be identified without getting up from the table and 1/3 open space. Dedicate the big blank wall to an art gallery of beautiful pictures with the same mats and frames. It will be beautiful, less congested and really soothing for entertaining....See MoreRelated Professionals
