Comments (9)Appears you have a tile contractor on site who will be your best resource. Likely would need some kind of panel to separate the expansion/contraction of steel vs tile which requires adding thickness. Make sure the current stair set up passes code for handrails, gaps, etc. if you're in the US....See MoreHelp needed converting carpeted floating stairs to wood or epoxy/resin
Comments (12)heritage, I know you didn't . I was just mentioning the unsafe part regarding kids in case the op didn't know. Stairs and balusters are all unsafe when it comes to kids. doesn't matter what they're made of. kids will climb on anything. that's why I mentioned the teaching part. it was nothing against your comment....See MoreFlooring under floating stairs
Comments (5)Hi Tiffany, I'm not a pro. But from your picture, it is easy to see why your contractor wants to remove some of the treads temporarily. It will be extremely difficult for him (or her!) to lay vinyl tile under near the stairs and have it look right. If you don't believe me, get a ream of paper. Get a pair of scissors or a razor blade. Cut the paper so it will fit under the stairs. Then lay it on the floor, as if it were your tile. You'll quickly see how hard it is to lay the tile under the stairs. If you tell your contractor not to remove the treads during install, be prepared for an additional fee. A big one!...See MoreWhat is an estimated cost for floating staircase with cable railings?
