Eating well to mend broken bone
Comments (11)??? fresh vegetables? Why would you think that will help rebuild bones? Outside of quinoa, trying to combine incomplete vegetable proteins to equal balanced animal proteins is actually quite difficult. A 120-lb woman requires approx 20 grams of protein a day: BALANCED. If the protein is incomplete, the usable intake is proportionately reduced. Most Americans eat sufficient protein on a daily basis. It would be unusual if you needed more, but I have noticed vegetarians/vegans (there's lots of 'em in CA) often have very unbalanced diets. It's pointless, for example, to say that spinach has lots of calcium. It does, but it's 'locked up' in a form almost unusable to the body. Soy has calcium, but not anywhere near the recommended daily amt to prevent osteopenia and osteoporosis. It has to be fortified to be equal to cow's milk, and with either one, you would need to drink 3 cups per day, every day, just to meet the minimum 1,000mg recommended level. I don't know anyone who does that! Many people are deficient in Vitamin D these days, but you need a blood test to be certain. You should NEVER take Vit D without a blood test. Like all oil-based vitamins, it has a toxicity factor. The test is easy and cheap. Calcium supplements work best in combination with magnesium, Vit C and Vit D. All of these are cheap! There is absolutely no reason at all to spend an outrageous amount of $$$ on these particular supplements. I have taken those particular vitamins/minerals for decades, and usually use Puritan Pride (mail order). They have regular sales, very modest S&H fee, no state tax if you're outside their domicile state of NY. I've been a satisfied customer of theirs for decades. The calcium in dairy is actually better absorbed by the body because of the lactose acidity. Higher acidity is more conducive to calcium absorption. So an alkaline diet will make it harder for your body to use the ingested calcium (most calcium is wasted; only a small percentage of it is actually used by the body). What to watch out for: phosphate. Calcium absorption is limited by the presence of phosphate. Calcium triphosphate as an additive is 25% less effective for body absorption than using calcium tricarbonate to fortify foods. Also, a diet high in potassium and calcium is hard on the kidneys (renal system). Do not remain long-term on high supplement doses unless you have thoroughly analyzed your everyday diet and determined what specific deficiencies you might have - preferably with the help of a nutritionalist or someone similar. Most doctors, sadly, aren't experts on nutrition. Here is a link that might be useful: Puritan mail order vitamins...See MoreAbout the broken bone...is it leg or ankle???
Comments (5)Not sure which they would call it, pattico, but sure am sorry that your DD had that happen. Guess the doc will just have to understand. Does DD think they will hire a temp or is she worried about her job? My DS, who has had back problems since he was 18 just got the news yesterday that his back has gotten worse. An ER dr. told him he would probably have to have surgery. I told DS not to worry so much until he could get other opinion. Unfortunately, he lost his job because it was his first day. I knew that he would not make it through the day. The job required him to stand at a machine and move fast around it. He could barely stand up straight for the past few days, much less have to move fast. He told them the problem and they sent him home. And he is not eligible for employment with them again. Bad thing is, he has been trying to get on with this company for over a year. His employment sure came at a bad time....See MoreOT: Broken Bones Need Prayers

Comments (62)Sh! 7 is going to hit the fan...I met the handicap van at the bus stop BUT it was a mini BUS with the same set of steps..was very hard to get him down two steps on crutches but last step onto ground was much higher if he would have tried hopping down it to the ground he would be in another cast...finially Tim sat on the step covered in melted snow and mud and got out..I was fuming..and you won't believe this .....there is a wheelchair lift on this bus but when I ask about me standing beside him and holding onto him I was told we can't use the ramp/ lift unless the child's in a wheelchair. The poor driver was in a tizzy she was so upset at this ...she told me at the school they plan to put a chair on the lift strap him in the chair to get him out...fine..but I don't have that option. Tims ortho requested a handicap minivan to come to the house. I know they have them as Amiee rode it. I dang near ripped my wrist out today helping my boy...this is UNACCEPTABLE..I've kept my peace so far thru all of this but either they provide acceptable transport to and from school or I will have the local Pittsburgh news be at the bus stop as Tims boarding..I plan to tell them this Monday and since they know me they know one phone call and the news along with Senitor Don White will come running...and they know its not a threat but a promise. I worry how all this will affect how Tims treated....his school does a red light yellow light green light..green light being very well behaved...Tims had green lights since day one of kindergarden and in fact has commendations. If suddenly this changes I'll know why. This is really pathetic...all this BS...but they are messing with the wrong By7ches cub...I know how to dress, and how to talk and how to maintain dignity. ..and I know people...to bad in the end if I have to call out the media Tims going to suffer..I have to think very carefully how I'm going to proceed. I have to protect Tim now and in the future...truely walking on egg shells....See Morepolardream
