What Are Your 2017 Goals?
Comments (55)I thought this was a good read... An excerpt from Dr Wayne Dyer on new year resolutions: "This day that you’re living right now is the only day you get. Period. You can resolve to be skinny when next July rolls around, or to quit smoking next month, or to write that book you’ve been meaning to, or to embark on your overdue exercise program by the end of this year. You can go about resolving until the cows come home, and you still have to live your life just like everyone else on the planet: One day at a time. You can only live minute to minute. You can certainly use up your present moments thinking about what you’ll be doing in the future, but that doesn’t change the fact that you can only live in the now. The important question to be asking yourself is: How am I going to live in the present moment this year? Will I waste these moments reviewing the way I used to behave? Will I waste these moments reviewing how I would like to behave in the future rather than resolving to live each day to the fullest? The new year is a good time to initiate a plan so you can make some changes and help live your life to the fullest. See if you can practice thinking differently. Decide very specifically what it is that you would like to change about yourself in 2017. If you have some goals in mind, vow to work on them day by day rather than making them a year-long project. When you set up day-to-day goals for yourself, you can begin living this way for the rest of your life. Remember this little piece of advice, which will be extremely helpful to you if you can incorporate it into your life: When you go for one entire day without eating sugar (or not smoking, or being assertive, or any other new behavior), you are a totally different person at the end of that day. What you must learn to do is let that totally different person decide on the second day whether to do it again on this new day, rather than letting the same old person decide today that it is going to be difficult in a couple of days anyhow, so what’s the use. Always let the New You make the decision, and then you’ll be living your present moments. Remember, you are in control of all thoughts in your head. When you are using up your present moments to worry about the future, constantly reviewing the past to come up with how you should have done it differently, or contemplating disaster, remind yourself that you are wasting this particular present moment. Practice cancelling out negative thoughts for a few minutes at a time. Vow to enjoy the next five minutes regardless of what has previously transpired or what you think is about to happen. Remind yourself of the folly of wasting your present moments on mental activity that focuses exclusively on your past or imagined future. All of your thoughts about what you should have done, or how terrible things were in the past will not change one tiny slice of the past. As you celebrate this new year and each precious present moment, here are 10 reminders to help you live in the Now: 1. Remember that habits are changed by practicing new behavior. By practicing new thinking every five minutes, you’ll soon begin to master the art of present-moment living. 2. Do an honest assessment of your “problems.” You’ll very likely discover that almost all of your problems are really in your head and not located in reality. 3. Take time to be mindful of everything around you. Begin to look at your entire surroundings in a new light. Observe every detail on every face, every building and every object. If you do this often enough it will become a habit that will facilitate your being alive in every moment of the year. 4. Change your attitude. Begin an attitude-redevelopment plan. That means practice enjoying everything you do. 5. Be specific about what you want and take action. Decide on one thing that you would like to work on and do it today. Work at it daily, rather than making it a long-range objective. 6. Create a self-improvement agenda for yourself. Put on your agenda whatever activities you’ve always thought about but never had time to do. Do them now. 7. Rid yourself of mundane chores that are not really that important. Spend more time making your life a pleasure. 8. Eliminate procrastination as a lifestyle. Instead of talking to yourself about what you are going to do next week or even tomorrow, use this time to start a new task. 9. Don’t give up control of your life to others. You cannot enjoy the present moment if you are busy trying to make everyone else like you. People respect you more when you operate from a position of strength and self-reliance. 10. Feel good about yourself. You are a magnificent human being. Always feel good about that self that you are always with." From Chapter 3, The Power of Intention — Dr. Wayne W. Dyer...See MoreWhat's your take on the flour shortage?
Comments (52)I'm not sure Lars. This was a big story this morning here demanding hazard pay and proper safety gear...masks, etc. I'm up early, usually 3am. Nurses are walking off work after asked to ignore CDC safe practices they have followed for years. In my immediate area I have not witnessed anyone without a mask. All deliveries are gloved and wearing masks. DH filled both our cars with gas with a bag over his hand 10 days ago and noted the two inside employees were wearing masks. We use Clorox wipes on everything....credit card, car door handle, steering wheel, door handle coming inside, straight to the sink with lots of soap. (he did not go inside the 'mini mart'.) just wanted to fill our cars. it is just 2 miles up the road. Mailman who I adore, is doing double duty. He was up the road Sunday and twice today. Our front liners want to get to us what we need. ALL needed employees are wearing masks. UV is not enough outside no mater how hot the sun. Do both. Spray or wipe first, Clorox correct dilution, or alcohol. dry in the sun spinning along a table...soapy soap in a bowl or sink. Rinse. What can be soaped. Please watch what we are going through in NYC. You can make a difference in your community. Proactive. I am 18 days indoors, DH 10. this is serious....See MoreLos Angeles Garment District Fabric shops?
Comments (25)lars, most people don't have an outlet for sewing thread. I was in WM yesterday for the first time since way back when and the small sewing dept was almost devoid of any fabric, except for fleece and there were only a handful of thread spools. Joanns, was only marginally better, marginally, at best. At both venues, both the cotton fabric and thread were in seriously short supply. We are going to see even more tightening of the market for sewing supplies, among many other things. I have sewn sunbrella fabric into outdoor pillows and it does last a long time. Mine are not filled with drain dry stuffing so I don't leave them in the rain. I also have some reusable grocery bags made of sunbrella and I have been using them for almost two decades now and I see no reason that they would not last another generation. I don't recall using any special thread to sew them. But they are not exposed to the elements and that is the factor that makes the most difference with outdoor things as to which thread to use. Donna, yes the pattern companies are repackaging the old stuff, but without the fabrics available to sew them up with. I had a whole big bunch of vintage patterns from the 20s up to my own that probably look a lot like yours. I had to get rid of them and had a hard time finding anyone interested in them. I ended up sending some to my sister who passed them on to some other venue, and still have a few. I went through the remaining ones recently and relegated some to the compost heap. I am never going to use them. I did use some of those from the 40s when I was a young woman. There are cuts and construction in some of those old patterns that you just don't see anymore. I think that I have all the patterns that I am ever going to use in my small stash. I got rid of a lot of things that were really mundane and quite unremarkable....See Moreholidays going to be different
Comments (72)I agree with one of the above posters that holiday gatherings are often too hectic to be the best. I alway encourage a non holiday visit because there is not the intense focus on making it into something that it really is not, or making it the "most wonderful time of the year". Blech! I used to get so wrapped up in this nonsense that I, literally, made myself sick and I hated every minute of it. I stopped doing that and it was one of the best things that I have ever done for myself. Last holiday passed almost unnoticed by me and I can live with that. Lars, about the kids going to school.....it is not just the school year that has been disrupted, it is the entire infrastructure of the modern family and the community that they live in and the country that they live in. It amounts to a bit more than a sabbatical when so much shuts down. A sabbatical is usually a deliberate action taken for the benefit of who ever it is that is doing it. This situation is not that. People don't work ,business fails, families fall apart, people lose their homes, their careers and their resources. All of that has dire consequences. You know what is going on, I am sure. Children miss so much when they can't go to school...so very, very much!!!. I have one grandchild who is a senior this year, one going into the third grade and one who was to start kindergarten. For each of these kids it is missing out on all of the extra curricula that they fill their social lives and build their education and their peer group. Many are isolated in their homes and are missing socialization that the kids generally learn from their communities and close families. Their parents have been stretching themselves thin to do their best and to keep on working and bringing in a living. Parents never expected to be both teacher and bread earner and total care giver. That is not the pattern of modern family life. Like it or find fault with it, it is so. Everything has fallen out from under them, suddenly and without warning. It is so stressful, and devastating to many. There is no such thing as a sabbatical for an entire country and its economy and families. This is neither voluntary nor to the benefit of anyone. Your expressed views lead me to think that, perhaps, you are not raising children or grandchildren or supporting a family or investing in their future, as are so many others. I don't mean disrespect. That is just what it sounds like, to me....See MoreAphaea
