Help! My peace lily is dying
Comments (3)Mine is dying too (It was a plant that someone gave us for my Grandpa's funeral). The leaves are dying (it was near a cold wall and I moved it), they are crisping as well. I clipped them off, there are a few shoots so we'll see. I think I wasn't watering it enough, because it's in a planter with no drain holes and since it was winter I was afraid to water it too much. Does your plant have drainage? If not you may be watering it too much. Usually I wait for my leaves to droop and then water it. That seemed to work okay, but then it HATES the cold around our house. There is another plant in with it and it's doing fine, but I have no idea what it is....See Morehelp.. my peace lily is dying!! :(
Comments (1)Slim - 50* is too cold for your plant. Both photosynthesis and water usage slow to a near stop at temperatures that low, so it sounds like you're almost assuredly over-watering. Adding potting soil and fertilize are likely to have provided the impetus for the death knell. Covering the crown just improves the living conditions for the organisms that have already been at work rotting the stems, and the added fertilizer may well have simply added to a high level of salts probably already in the soil. Most houseplants do best at temperatures above 60*, and 55* is about the lower limit for good growth/vitality for a variety of reasons. Most houseplants like a soil that drains freely - so freely that if you water to the point of saturation, with a good amount of the water applied moving through the soil and flushing accumulating salts out, the soil drains well enough that you don't need to be concerned about root rot. We can talk about fertilization, watering technique, soil choice, light, and other important considerations, but I'm afraid this particular plant is probably in serious jeopardy. Comments (6)I would not re-pot it if it's ailing now, you might end up losing the whole thing. Give it some time to adjust to it's new surroundings & light and it should start to grow new leaves with the right care.In the meantime if you have any leaves that are yellowing, or just look awful, you can pull them off, stem and all. Place it where it will receive bright indirect light. "Dapple" sun is ok. (No direct burning sun) Water the soil thoroughly when the top couple inches or so feel almost or close to dry, but not quite yet dried out.If the soil dries too much, the leaves will wilt and you can get brown tips, same with over-watering. I make sure mine gets watered BEFORE it wilts, because you could damage roots doing it that way. You don't want to water if it still feels wet after a weeks time (it shouldn't be) with the good draining. Ck back in a day or so if you don't think it's quit ready for a drink yet. Peace lilies like semi moist soil, not wet and not dried out. I would not fertilize your peace lily now. Ailing plants will not respond to it and it could make things worse. Wait until the plant is doing well and putting out new growth first. When you do use fertilizer, use half, or less strength and only now and then. If you see any leaves with some dried brown tips, that can be no big deal if it's being watered correctly. Using hard-water can cause brown tips, as well and over-feeding and over-watering and that can hold true for other plants as well. You can use rainwater, or distilled if brown tips bother you. Comments (7)An open body of water will naturally oxygenate to a depth of about 2 metres. So a garden pond shouldn't have too much trouble with oxygenation if there's reasonable air flow around it. And then the nutrients (fish 'manure') added to that would make it perfect for watering plants. So no wonder the Spaths are doing so well. Even if your ponds are topped up by town water, going through the pond would 'fix' it up. My water is from a bore, 45 metres underground. I doubt there'd be any oxygen left at that level. But being sprayed through the air by the sprinklers would help. Surprised they'd grow in tidal areas. But maybe the tide is backing up fresh water and it's the fresh that's actually inundating them....See Morehc mcdole
