Longwood Gardens does a Chrysanthemum Festival each year. Here are some beauties from this year's collection:

These are the size of a baseball caps:

There are 9500 blooms on each column wrap

There are so many more exquisite blooms, but I just wanted to give you a peek.

Thank you for sharing Jojoco, luckydog. mums can get a bad rep for being bland and boring. your pictures are a refutation to that.

will Longwood be pretty even in January when i might have time for a trip up there?

Lisa, lots of things bloom in January--the citrus trees (Grapefruit, Ora Blanco--and they smell divine!) Also, the Acacia is in full bloom then too. If you come by January 9th, the Christmas displays will still be out (and I can tell you they will be amazing!) And of course there will be the usual unparalleled display of the regulars.

Well Howard, lookee here, you want to go to Chicago. Lots of company. The thing with going back to NY rather than elsewhere, for me, is that NY is easy to get into and out of, I can do a RT in one day, don't need hotels, don't need to rent a car, don't need a pet sitter at home etc, etc, etc..... That and I don't feel like taking my vacations in the States going to orchid shows. If I'm going to go to the trouble of organizing a few days out of town, I want it to be well worth it. Albeit,it's fun meeting people from the forum. Not having Paul around anymore to take care of the dogs and birds, when I decide to disappear for a couple of days, just adds another "issue" to consider. At the moment,I don't have the energy.

Which perennials (and/or shrubs) look good in Fall?

During the past decade, I have made a very conscious effort to expand my Fall garden display, so that right now, today, my garden has 30+ perennials in bloom! The roses continue - three different "Knockouts", "Claire Austin", "Europeana", "The Fairy" - as do the two abelias, "Edward Goucher" and "Little Richard", and the two different hypericums and delosperma. Along with all the lovely grasses and plants that others have already mentioned - and some surprising reblooms from the monarda "Raspberry Wine", geranium "New Hampshire Purple" and hemerocallis "Happy Reurns" - some of my Fall favorites blooming now are: kirengashomas, ceratostigma, leucoseptrum, solidago "Fireworks", numerous sedums (but especially the cascading "Lidakense") chelone "Hot Lips", gentiana, eupatorium "Chocolate", anemone "Honorine Jobert". Full of buds and still to come: aster oblongifolius "Raydon's Favorite", aconitum carmichaeli, and many species chrysanthemums. Non-flowering, but looking great: callicarpa "Early Amethyst, and the white-berried sibling,"Duet"; all the bright red seed pods on the Cornus kousa; clusters of berries on all the viburnums and ilex verticillata, as well as the aronia "Brilliantisima". Most years, I still manage to have some things still blooming right up to Thanksgiving. . .did I mention that Fall is my favorite season in the garden ? Carl

Thanks. It's obvious to all gardeners (in our growing conditions) that the photography has to be a bit more selective/ creative at this time of year. Can't fill in all the gaps with fall mums. In fact, I do feel uncomfortable at times posting any pictures. It's like somebody comes to your garden but you only let them look where you want them to look; namely, where the gardening has been more successful. Failures may be less inspiring than successes, but perhaps there's more to learn from them.

Chrysanthemums are a curiosity because they are used in disparate ways, almost as if they are different species. There are the light-manipulated plants grown in glass houses for the cut flower and pot plant trade, the pampered monsters of the show bench and the few tough customers which fulfil the role of hardy troopers out in the Autumn garden. These uses are so different it is hard to imagine a forum which would have universal appeal to all growers of the various types. The Chrysanthemums used as temporary decoration are not annuals. They are perennials but are just used as throw away features since they have been brought on under artificial conditions and can't take winter weather. 'Loving' Chrysanthemums is not the same as being obsessed by them like the kind of people who are in Chrysanthemum societies. They grow them in serried ranks like vegetables, or even under glass to protect them from the weather. They primp, feed, disbud and generally faff about with their plants and are not interested in anything other than the 'perfect' single bloom for show. As a garden feature the plant is of little interest to them and they certainly don't grow them out in the open garden beds. They are not usually much interested in anything else in the garden. The kinds of hardy Chrysanthemums which stand up to permanent use in the garden are really not of much interest to the Chrysanthemum buff or the commercial grower. And for the all round gardener they have no particular features in their care and cultivation which make them any different from hundreds of other hardy perennials. Those are so beautiful. And yet, when you try to buy mums in the fall they are all the same tired old ones we've had for years. I wish for some variety!

I am very resentful of Mums. They are a consolation, in my book. They are the flower that say "ha! everything else is dead, you are stuck with me."

I forgot about football mums, now those make me feel a little better. Your photos are so pretty!

Next, up the ultimate consolation flower: dissapointsettias.

I generally dislike Mums. Especially those rust colored ones that look all bristly and harsh.. And I hate how people clump a few together and call it a fall display. I'm probably still not over all the mums I have had to buy (and deliver) as a mom of sons who played fall sports in high school. But, Longwood has made me learn to love some mums. Still, you'll notice I didn't feature any of the rust colored ones (except those by the Mumbrellas.)

Don't even get me started on Ferns. They are a bridge too far.

Very pretty, I am not big on mums either but these are much nicer than the typical mums in my area.

Disappointsettias,, love it ! not much is more depressing than a scraggly poitsettia in january. extra depression points if seen in a bank or insurance office.

I think I'm going to change some minds about Pointsettias. The Longwood Christmas starts on November 19th and features some beautiful pointsettias.

Lovely. And I do like poinsettias and can generally keep one in very good shape for quite a while into dreary January. Will be looking forward to seeing them at Longwood.
