What Size Pots/Pans fit Max Burton Portable Induction Unit?
Comments (19)Definitely need to stir porridges with MB units. Ran an experiment this morning with cooking oatmeal in a small, 1 qt saucepan (5" diameter magnetic base). The MB had trouble with low heat settings with the small saucepan. At a "2" setting, the small pan would intermittently boil furiously in a torodial pattern and then shut down, boil, shut down, etc. A "3" setting was manageable with frequent stirring. With the previous experiment with the 2 qt sauce pan, the small bubbles started out in a ring shaped band, but quickly spread across the whole bottom and gave an very even boiling. Did not think to look with smaller pan this am, but note the cooking description above. I agree that overnight in a crockpot is much the better way to cook steel cut oats. I was only experimenting because of amck's posting. I use my MB for pretty much the same reasons you do and for "cooking stations" at some large parties. Sounds like Tuesday Morning could be a good deal. We used to have one in the nearest big town (actually, our state's largest city), but they pulled out a year ago. Apparently, our market area was deemed too small for the turnover they wanted....See MoreSize of pans on induction cooktop
Comments (8)If the pan is larger than the burner then the edges could be "cool". As I remember, my Fagor guide recommended no more than an inch larger than the burner diameter (e.g., 10" pan on 9" burner). I'll have to recheck tomorrow. See also the cookware link below. If the pan is smaller than the burner ... "will the reduction in power be noticeable?" You mean that your electrical bill will be lower? That a pan-sensing feature will decrease the burner output (so that a 10 setting is effectively, say, a 7 setting)? That there will be an electromagnetic field beyond the pan edge that is wasted (note that there won't be any reduction in cooking power)? Something else? Comments (50)A few induction tips: (Love my Induction-- user for 8+ years) Cleaning takes only a few minutes! I cut up old, soft towels to clean the top. Dampen a clean one with hot water and use a drop of Dawn or Joy; rub the cooktop with the soapy-side then flip the rag to just-the-wet side and wipe off the soap. Buff with a clean, dry towel-rag. (I have the stainless steel top and bottom edge--cleaning them this way is no problem.) ONLY USE A CLEAN RAG (sponge, paper towel) EACH TIME for washing or drying the top! I am concerned about thermal-shock to the glass. Get a nice, thick, silicone trivet/potholder and put it on a corner of your cooktop. A great place to move hot pots and pans to or to place pans, safely, from the oven. Learn NOT TO shake pans! (PS - I have used paper towels under pots. They can get scorched. And the one kind seemed to leave a trace of its waffle-pattern that I had to buff out with the cook-top crème. I now just try to use a bigger pot for things prone to bubbling over -- oil, oatmeal, etc.)...See Morebest gas cooktop for small diameter pots and pans
Comments (21)cpartist, I did love the idea of induction also, particularly, for the fact that it would eliminate the combustion of gas in my house. With gas, I will need a more powerful hood than with induction, and may set it up to automatically turn on (my husband is not awesome about turning on the hood). Jerry, the high EMFs are a product of the way that induction works. Standard electric stoves would presumably produce some measurable EMFs, but not the equivalent. sjbphb20, thank you so much for your post! I will definitely check out the Thermador in a showroom. I take it you are satisfied with the support the grates offer for your small pans (they are not 'tippy')? Are the extra low burners standard on that unit, or something you were able to choose? Finally, is the clicking just when you ignite, or during cooking? (My Dacor sometimes will click incessantly when one of the burner rings is not lined up properly.)...See MoreToronto Veterinarian
