So of course it is expensive, but I can get it in my city. Not quite totally out the question too expensive, but nearly. I think the 49" version is out of the question, but we might be able to afford the 34" one. Another question: the look of the Ortal fireplace above is similar to this Valor one I like - this would need to be built in of course and would stick out 20" into the room. I suppose it might be possible to build a very small (2" maybe) framed box around the Valor and float it on the wall? If so, it might achieve some of the look of the first photo above. But it would still stick out a precious 5" further.

Actually in New York state you can have a ventless gas fireplace in your bedroom. (Its possible NYC has a different code) I was just reading the code yesterday. Up to 10,000 btus. Must have an oxygen sensor. There is a requirement based on the size of the room (air mass, you have to do a calc). So unless your bedroom is super tiny yes you can have a ventless gas in your bedroom. I just googled and found zero news stories on a ventless gas fireplace causing death unless it was a suicide. I don't think they are the best way to go but if you follow code and use common sense I don't see a problem. If we get one we only plan to use it occasionally on cold nights for about 15 min before bed. The room is large and opens to other rooms. Our house is dry to the little added moisture would be welcome. We are still researching as it is difficult to find one that is only 10,000 btus.

If the wood paneling above the fireplace serves NO PURPOSE then take it down. Right now it is the odd man out. If you want to keep wood above, I would replace it with the flooring product (order a few more boxes)...but I'm not a huge fan of that look. The clock will look better against a clean painted surface. I would stain the mantle deeper (it is clashing with your choices) and see if you can use the same stain on the beam that is visible from the kitchen (clashing just as much as all other reds in the space). As for flooring, I would like a little bit more gold/brown to give warmth to the space. Right now all of your choices are COLD browns and COLD grays. And in a winter playground the COLD tones will always feel STERILE. The first photo shows a floor that is almost there...but not quite. One step warmer (a snick more gold) and you should be there. Don't forget to stain/paint anything that is red wood (that is staying put).

Question, will this put out heat like it would in the open? Being inset also insulated and covered chimney I’m wondering if I’ll get much heat from the stove or if it’ll be like a fireplace that’s decorative but not much heat? Anyone have experience with one?
