Who would I call to install a range hood?

I'm so sick of looking at this gross 48 year old range hood with fan and light. Nothing bothers my husband, so I'll do what needs to be done. First of all, what kind of person would do the best job doing that? Also, can I pick the one I want out, if I just know the dimensions of our old one (it fits between 2 cabinets).

Thanks for any ideas, besides getting rid of my husband. ;)

Is the existing range hood secured to a cabinet above it? Or does it have ventilation going all the way to the ceiling with no cabinet above the range hood?

Hi Clayton. I took the screen off (yuk!) and here's what I can see. Yes, it's attached to the top front and back of the upper cabinet. There's a spice rack in the space right above the hood which is only about 2" deep.

I can see that when the fan towards the back of the unit is on, (Yes, it is vented through the roof), it probably only covers the fan louvres partially, but it's impossible to see. This is a pretty deep hood. It's 19 and 1/2" front to back, so it comes out pretty far to the front.......almost starts to go over the front 2 elements.

There is a plug-in that goes from the electrical supply to the fan motor inside all this.

I'm sure they make them much less deep and high now. My husband who is not a fix-it guy will say he can do it, but that might mean I'll be without a range hood and light for a couple of weeks, and then I'll call an electrician. Do I pick out the one I want and then ask an electrician if it's okay and if so, then he/she will install it?

Unfortunately, the cabinets are in the factory already and couldn't be changed - we checked today. The Modernaires, look wonderful. I asked about one in the photo gallery but they said it was too expensive for them to make. So why taunt us with it? :) However, DH found a Zephyr that I had missed and it is deeper than the Imperials. It is http://zephyronline.com/products/cheng/okeanito_wall I'm still checking out its feature's and functionality and hoping that I can work in a little discount from the appliance store since this plus the range top and other misc appliances will add up. I also wonder if there are any look alikes that are less expensive since this one blows my hood budget out the window (pardon the pun) However, it is a key design feature of the kitchen so I do think it is worth it. And 48" is the largest it goes so I don't feel that bad about the cabinets not being able to make room for 54". Thank you for your help! Those Modernaires do look lovely By the way, NYC, did you put lighting inside of your glass cabinets? I like the idea but decided not to because it will be a while before I accumulate a showcase of teapots there. Did you put undermount lighting under all of your cabinets? I'm wondering if I'll really need it under everything but then it might look dumb if I only have it on the inner part of my L Txs

Not a pro but I just finished a remodel and the HVAC company dealt with my hood. It wasn't a simple connection because I was moving my cooktop slightly so the vent had to be moved. It also could not go up because I have concrete soffits and the vent in my building (a high rise) is in the wall. I am not sure how a KD would help unless you want to remodel your kitchen and move the range. Obviously a stove in front of a window is not ideal and there have been threads on this placement - you could probably find them by doing a search. Have you thought about a down draft type of vent because it would seem that any kind of hood in front of a window would look odd - but I am not a pro or a kitchen designer. A down draft isn't the ideal type of venting system but I would think aesthetically it would look better than a hood bisecting a window.

Buy the hood from a local appliances store that will provide installation. Make sure that the hood you buy matches the diameter of the duct going from the hood to the outside. For example, if your kitchen’s exhaust duct is 8” diameter, look for the specifications of the hood to state it needs an 8“ duct. If you have no duct, then you must look for a hood that offers a recirculating option.

Anyone? I've read that I should probably call someone like a builder who might (or not) feel comfortable with the wiring. At which time, I would call an electrician. Even though many of the You Tubes make removing and installing the exhaust fan hood look simple (without the electricity hooked up), things aren't ever that simple. ;) Any more input on how I should proceed with the least amount of cost, but the most safety? Thanks!

Check with a local appliance store to see if they can recommend an installer. Places like Home Depot and Lowes have verified installers too.
