Alocasia (Or, Punishing Myself)

My penchant for annoying myself knowing few—if any—bounds, I’ve decided that I have to grow alocasias. They’re uncooperative.

The alocasia polly started dying as soon as I got it home. I didn’t even manage to get any photos. As i was throwing its soil out, I noticed some of the root balls. I’m now trying to convince them to grow.

My frydek, below, is doing somewhat better. It puts out new leaves, but, with each new leaf, the oldest leaf yellows, droops, and dies. Does anyone have any suggestions? It is in a loose soil, heavily amended with perlite, and a top dressing of coco husk chunks.
