Input needed: light upper cabinet, dark lower cabs trend
Comments (4)Just so you know, the link needs an "h" before the url (it got cut off). I like the mix - it's the best of both... oh please don't make me finish that Hannah Montana song. Anyway - I think that with two kinds of cabinets, it's like getting two kitchens at the same time. I think a lot of us have a couple "dream kitchens" in mind but we can usually only do one at a time. I don't know if it's a fad... but you know what? It's your house. Do what makes YOU happy. If this makes you happy, you should definitely do it....See MoreLet's talk about Lumens - Kitchen Lighting Design
Comments (12)I went to a local lighting store (where I had previously bought fixtures) and got free help with the design. My kitchen is 9.5 x 13 approx., unlike yours I have cabs down both long sides ( one of those sides is shortened by the doorway to the basement steps) so my light is confined to a smaller footprint. I have 5 LED recess kits, 3 on one side with the main counter and sink, 2 on the basement entry side next to the frig and pantry; each 800 lumens I believe (maybe 900) = 3600-4000 lumens, and even dimmed to 75-80%, I have more than enough light for the counters with upper cabs without turning on the UCLs. I really feel that I didn't need all the undercabinet lights -- I rarely turn them on. I am a bit older and really appreciate good lighting -- I go into the kitchen when I need to see small print well. So it seems to me that for your space around 10,000-12,000 lumens would be a ballpark. I have no idea how the use of track lighting for some of that will effect the dispersal and effectiveness of the light, though....See Morekitchen task lighting with no uppers
Comments (8)Flo - this is a remodel for a walkout basement in a cottage with the kitchen and main living areas in the basement. See attached photos for current state. The walkout wall has two large windows and a slider with a view to the lake. Our hope is to have the subfloor, insulation and walls framed in the next few weeks. There will be no window in the kitchen so lighting is important. There will be can lights but the wall with only shelves should have additional light I feel. I have not worked out where the lights need to go but need to make some final decisions before the drywall goes up. In the pictures, the kitchen is going to the left of the stairs on the back wall. I like the articulating light idea and I think it has a nice cottage feel. For a standard 8' ceiling , how many shelves would you suggest and then what distance from the counter would the light go?...See MoreUpper kitchen cabinet design
Comments (25)Ugh, our unit is actually one that can be completely built into the cabinet so no warranty issues there. you can add front cabinet panels etc but we chose to leave the stainless. It wasn’t a $5 hack and if you can’t tell we didn’t skimp on anything in our kitchen so it’s not about the $$$. It might ruin the look for you but we are very pleased with the look and it is just what we were going for. It’s obvious our taste are very different. I would love to see your kitchen since mine is not up to your high standards....See Moregardengrl66 z5
