I think painting the front door and sidelites a more muted color would go a long ways.

Thanks Suki—it has been 3 colors since I’ve lived here, originally teal when we moved in. I shifted it to a light griege which was fine but very bland and then we tried yellow to spice it up. So far I haven’t really loved any of them :(

How about a creamy white instead of bright white on the upper level?

Agree, the yellow door is jarring. Perhaps a grey similar to the trim boards.

A small thing, if those are red bulbs in the lanterns they should go.

Haha. Those red bulbs are just for Halloween since at night there are shadow cut outs of wolves in the windows:). Thanks for the suggestions!!

No matter what you do to the outside, pick a dark grey roof. It goes with almost anything you will choose to do tot he exterior. It’s possible that doing a white schmear like Romabio might improve the “antique” look of a Tudor and make the timbers on the top look better.

Tudors are a little sedate, so any brightly colored door might look a little off.

And I disagree about your house having no charm. Glad is doesn’t have arches, curlicues, or other doodads!

Awe thank you—I guess it’s just bc I feel like it’s not at it’s full potential!!! I am looking at a ‘slate colored’ roof that is grey but a hint of warmth. But now I’m rethinking. I had to give 3 potential options bc of supply chain issues.

I love Celery’s rendition with the green. The door could be a different color, too. ( No yellow).

But the BIGGEST impact would come from professional landsacping. Everything else about your home is lovely. Take a walk or drive and check out beautiful homes and see how many of them sing because of the landscaping!

Your gut feel in your first post is correct when you say "This house has no charm in its Tudoring, no pretty slopes or arches". That's what's off about the house. The only Tudor elements are the general asymmetry of the house and the half-timbered stucco section. Tudor style has more a steeply peaked gable (usually only one), arches, swoopy curves and multiple materials.

Your multiple shallow overlapping gables suit a Craftsman house, not a Tudor. The eave returns (the short pieces that come across on the 2 right-side gables) are not Tudor.

I live in a Tudor and like them but this house would look better de-Tudor'ed by removing the half timbered section. Pick the darkest brown from the brick and use that as your starting point for the colour. Paint the downspouts dark too.

Your landscaping could be improved. I like the hedge on the right side but I'd remove the one to the left of the walkway. Or prune the 4 shrubs down into cone shapes then let them grow out into more natural shapes.

Thanks Partim—it’s funny bc removing the Timbers or siding over them was the other approach we had been considering….and I love the idea about the bushes. I just removed a tree that was up front (and half dead) too — which actually helped a lot. But we are a WIP;)

The stucco area might look good with something like shakes. To me this house leans more Craftsman than Tudor. My computer skills are not up to the task of showing what that would look like, though.

I guess I am the only person who likes the yellow door LOL. Here is a potentilla hedge and some black-eyed Susans to repeat the colour.

Ha. I like my wild yellow door too—but I don’t mind that it’s not for everyone;) It was a moment of brightness in the thick of pandemic mode!

The only thing Tudor about the home is the decorative/false half timbering on the gable. Eliminate that and you can go in a more classical direction due to the window keystones and the quoins on the corners. A new front door and landscaping that opens things up, rather than blocking the entry are both important.

Thank you all for the thoughtful ideas—not feeling beholden to Tudor really is helping me and recognizing some of the more classic elements. I’m starting to map out what we might be able to do short term to update and work toward a longer term plan that can happen over time;)
