potted oleander for privacy

Hello!

I've had oleanders in these pots for a year. The intention was to close them off completely for privacy, but there are many branches and the neighbors can see through. If I keep pruning, will it close completely?

You picked the wrong plant! You do know that all parts of oleander are toxic!. Never let kids or pets get a bite of it! Be careful where you toss the clippings and don't burn them!!! I'm sure your local nursery can suggest a great replacement plant that will give you the cover you desire.

Looks like you're pruning it to a very flat shape. You won't get coverage with an oleander unless you let it get wide and bushy. The leaves are too thin and the plant isn't brushy. This isn't the right plant. Also agree with the @decoenthusiaste.

Do Oleanders grow in my zone. I heard that they were poisonest to animals, is this true. My mother in law had them all around her yard in Nevada and her dogs either did not chew on them or they didn't get sick from them.

Sew, I wont suggest, I have no idea of Texas plants....but I must ask you something. Oleander....I'm familiar with my plant in a 10" clay pot...has grown wonderfully, blooms OK...maybe a little later than I'd like...but I've been told that oldeander is a favorite plant in the south...but it has one distinct disadvantage....it is a beggar to dig out...its roots go down....pretty soon, they talk chinese. Is this a true fact....do you think you might have problems removing their roots. Don't mean to throw cold water on your plans....especially from out of the pool.....but thought I'd ask.

I'd just to add that if you take cutting at the end of summer and put them in old brown or dark green beer bottles, with some water, they root very easily. Alternatively, if you get high enough rainfall or else don't mind watering, just stick cuttings with all the lower leaves stripped off directly into garden soil and don't allow to dry out. They should root.

Ajax I grow many oleanders, You must repot that plant, if you want it to get bigger and be healthy, bump it up to a pot 2 times the size you have it in with a good draining potting soil, no fancy miracle grow just plain potting soil . And then when you prune do it just above where a leaf is , this promotes new growth repeat and next year you'll have a full flowering oleander. Dont over water, but keep it a little moist, spray the leaves with plain water in hot summer days to reduce stress especially on windy days. These plants can take hard cut back pruning, just not after Sept. and you can prune them also in spring to summer. Your plant will be fine, but make it happy give it a new bigger pot with fresh soil.Your plants is root bound and needs to grow. You wont be sorry.Everything Dale said is right, leaves will yellow when they get older and fall off, but being you have not repotted this plant in two years or ever it is time to do it, rule of thumb less fertilizer is better than to much.. Also too many plants crammed into too small of a container(s). Gardening in containers is a natural dwarfing/stunting process anyway but root congestion and competition will exacerbate the condition and prevent the shrubs from becoming full and densely foliated. Routine fertilizations is necessary and will help but won't fix. You need different plants and bigger (wider and deeper) containers.

I've never seen oleanders grown in pots or pruned so precisely so I don't know how they would respond to more pruning--I hope someone can help you. It's a really interesting use of oleanders. I bet they're very nice when they bloom. Still, a happy oleander is one that can be the size of a Volkswagen and potted lifestyle might not be a good fit for this plant.

(Oleanders are very popular plants where I live and I can't find and never have heard even anecdotal reports of people or pets being sickened or dying from them. The danger appears to be overblown.)
