Please help redesign/decorate our Dog Room/Fire Room
Comments (5)sueb20, Thanks for your reply. I like the ideas of gray wall and ceiling. To date I have always painted my ceilings white but am willing to try something new. The right yellow/gold sofa WOULD look wonderful. I will definitely paint the paneling the same color as the walls. We'll replace what we can first, with drywall. Lots of the gaps you see in the paneling are due to the forced hot water pumbing system which we removed. Oh the projects that just drag on.... Hi tinan - Two votes to paint the beams lighter and two to keep them the same, hmm. They are structural but after 15 years of seeing them, I may be ready to not see them. With the rich dark floor (this is my first dark floor ever and I'm so pleased with the feeling it conveys) to 'ground' the space, I think I like the idea of a lighter backdrop. The light IS attached to the beam and is so going away. (DH bangs his head constantly into it). Hi teacats, glad you like the sconce. Regarding gray walls - do you think that's too much grey? I appreciate the link to the burnt ember (I haven't tried that yet). It's only paint and I can certainly paint a few areas with different color swatches. I do have a rug which I love; here's a close up of it (with of course, the requisite dog): AnnieDeighnaugh - Nice to hear from you! The floor is more grey than brown. The stove has a fake fire-resistant I'm sure - weird large grey rock backsplash and is built on a rounded cement surface. I've often thought about tiling the cement floor and front with something from Fireclay or Heath, and eventurally replacing the weird faux surface. Do you think I could actually do something to make this look better in the meantime?!! Good progress yesterday. DH has completed the electrical and installed most of the insulation (for sound). We picked up 4 sheets of drywall and should get it up this morning....See MorePlease help me find a nice high-end throw
Comments (50)Thanks, Les, for all your comments and advice. I know I need to calm down. And you're right. I'm not striving for perfection; I want it comfortable and welcoming--but I also don't want to make a mistake that is avoidable. We do have ottoman overload, but we were dealing with a small room with very little wall space, and we wanted to be able to have four people camped out (and horizontal) for family TV viewing. And thus all the ottomans, which all do get used. As for tables, the striped ottoman doubles as a coffee table for drinks, etc. There is a table between the two dragonfly chair, and one next to the leather chair. I'm looking for a small one for the fireplace-end of the couch. We can't have one closer to the blue chairs because I want a walking space there. Lighting is tricky because of where the outlets are located. There is a lamp for the leather chair (not pictured), but the rest of the lighting is in the ceiling. It works so far but maybe we should re-think that, too. I had seen the firenze pillow in person but can't remember why it didn't work. I'm toying with having pillows made from the striped fabric, or the dragonfly fabric because I really would like more blue near the fireplace. Thanks for your comments Hoosier and Busy. I'm thinking the numbers and colors and will decide soon. Thanks again everyone!...See MoreDog bowl area out of the way of kitchen traffic?
Comments (28)We have something like this in our mud room. We have a large 110 lb black lab so having his dishes elevated is better for him. Our mud room was created from former deck space. During the addition, the window over my kitchen sink was removed and is a pass through to my mud room (there is a door as well but you have to walk a few steps into our family room then around the peninsula to get into the kitchen). The former window looks directly out double doors in my mud room that have a nice view of the water so we didn't want to close it up. Having the pass through is nice because we can reach through and turn on the faucet very easily to get water w/o leaving the mud room.We keep a very large plastic cup in the mud room room that we use to fill up the water bowl so we don't have to carry the water dish....See MoreNeed advice on Living Room decoration. Comments (23)great advice upthread I'll try to be short, probably repeating several people: -get rid of the white console next to the fireplace/look for smth else instead if you need it there for function -think of other window treatments. curtains? woven blinds? roman shades? any of these will look better. move your sectional a bit from the wall, both to allow room for window treatments and because furniture generally needs at least couple inches to breathe..that wil also make room seem larger -you already purchased the ottoman in the same color and style of the sofa..off white, right? well something different would be better, but it's okay..buy a throw, fold it and put there to break your lines a bit. tray is great too-both for function and beauty. you'll appreciate it when watching this TV -I liked reading how your wife gets her art:) okay..so if there's no real room for other suggestions(I'm also prejudiced against mass produced canvas art..maybe she can be talked into a print instead?..)..put that art there first. Make sure it fits-seems huge?.. Say you go for that a very similar art, you have there-a bit of white, black, brown, indigo blue, fiery yellow white and brown you already have in your room (btw like your furniture) pull your other colors (in pillows and throws and accessories) from that art -deep sophisticated blues, golds. can be metallic accessories (like vases or flower pots?), can be softest fur pillows can be velvet, can be knitted throw. everythhing you buy-make sure it's a different texture..leather is sleek you've got enough of it. Speaking from experience-I also have my fair share of leather:) then look for a big ticket items like curtains and a rug. (or simultaneously..just keep your general scheme in mind). you can decide to make them fairly neutral. repeat the color of the furniture, just different material of course. or go for one vivid deep color but make it a shag rag for example. Don't try to match pattern to art..art has a mind of its own. Look at the room as a whole..what does it ask for? and know yourself of course..say I love many rugs but I don't like to clean them lol. You know whether it's high traffic area, what your habits are, and whether you'll be sad for 5 min if the rug will have spots and then get over it, or will be sad for 5 days. when you buy a side table try, again, to introduce another texture, just different material in this case. maybe wood. maybe ceramics(garden stool?some of these look really modern). every new material you bring creates dimension. Dimension is something you look for when creating spaces. Why? well that what we've used to. Ouside always has it. Even when it's a desert or an ocean. It has depth. we need to recreate it with all sort of ways and means that are availiable to us.. Good luck! will be a cool room edited because of thousand typos..))...See MoreMaureen
