Indoor Potted Palm - what's the best soil for potted palms
Comments (5)Many thanks to everyone for your contributions and experiences. I got some pine mulch and put the 'fines' in the bottom. I bought two bags of the Miracle Grow blend for Cactus, Palms & Citrus. It is VERY light. I think everyone gave great advice. Going to try this and see how it GROWS. We grew them outside in the ground in California, but I was just a kid. Mother and Grannie just stuck them in the ground. As far as I know they never did anything else except "drip" water them with gray water the first season. After that, they were on their own. Our date palms were gigantic and the dates were yummy. There were several other varieties, but I don't know what the others were. I do recall that Grannie sprayed them with the hose from time to time to wash off the dust. They loved it. Having palms in the house makes me feel like I am home again. (Oh...those childhood memories). As for the size of the new pot, I got an emerald green ceramic Lotus pot and put it on a black wrought iron plant dolly with a clear plastic drip tray underneath. That will make it handy for moving when I clean the floors or rearrange things. The pot is about 4 inches bigger around in diameter, and in depth, it's about 1/3 deeper than the container it came in, so I think it is "joosta" - just right for the pot upgrade. The color is beautiful with the green palm fronds. One thing I did forget to ask, though. Should I cover the top of the soil with a little bit of the bark fines or the potting mix or both? I don't want to suffocate it since I know they need to breathe, but it does look a bit exposed on the surface. Thanks for your help, Palm lovers. ~Annie...See MoreAny suggestions for pots for indoor plants?
Comments (7)they DO like to be root bound.. not nearly as much as the bird of Paradise though. get a pot not much more than 1 or 2" bigger than what you have. A good sturdy plastic "nursery" pot is the best. the big black ones, with big drainage holes. you know, the ones that your plants come in when you buy them from the nursery. use a good potting mix. Buy a big plastic clear drainage pan that fits underneath it with room to spare. NOW, go out and find your glazed pot. with no drainage holes, and no tray. It will have to be big enough that the plastic tray and pot will fit inside comfortably. Now, more than likely the decorative pot will be taller than the plastic one. so, find something sturdy to place in the bottom of the decorative pot to raise up the plant. you can use big chunks of styrofoam, wood, other pots upside down.. what ever. Put the plastic tray and then the potted plant on top of that. It the decorative pot is wider, You can brace the plant's plastic planter with styrofoam, old t'shirt.. lol isn't someone trying to get rid of a bunch? wadded up newpaper works very well, on top of that newspaper spread out some spanish moss to beautify the whole top! Just like the pros. they BEST thing for you AND the plant AND the decorative pot is to NOT plant them directly in to the decorative pot....See MoreBest Indoor plants for cold climate?
Comments (4)I live outside Chicago. It is like 2 degrees today. I have a now almost 10' ficus tree in my home. A real one. Sits in a large, 24" round pot. It sits next to a large french door facing East. Above it are some windows with blinds but gets diffuse light. You can grow a lot of plants indoors in the cold. As long as you keep the air humid (mine is set to 35%) and don't let it get below 40 degrees in the house (ok on that one). Fear not. The Ficus can be your friend in cold weather! Here is my sweety!...See MorePlanting in pots and keeping indoors?
Comments (9)I bought them from a mail order company in Florida. I'm in Maine, ==>> well go ahead and just completely change the facts .. lol ... i killed a lot of stuff.. ordering from a seriously diverse geographic location.. in the wrong season ... and frankly.. your seller should have warned you.. if it was a problem .. if they did not ... then they might not be a quality vendor ... [i hope it wasnt tyty or some such] on the other hand ... what i said above.. most made it ... just do what you are supposed to do ... in the future... order for spring delivery ... or mark the calendar ... and order the next spring ... the base issue.. for future research for you.. is hardening off .... and also .. the 6 weeks in ground freeze areas ... they might heave .. late in winter.. the plant.. not having the 6 weeks to grab hold.. might pop out of the ground.. and you dont find them until spring.. by which time.. they have freeze dried beyond hope ... the leaves are a good buffer ... and even better if they are under a few feet of snow .. the best winter insulator anywhere ... make sure.. you remove the leaves.. as the weather warms.. you dont want a water impervious mat of rotting leaves... the plant need air below .. maple leaves are the worst ... there was something else.. but i just blanked out ... but the final thing is... if they fail.. contact the seller.. and ask for replacement.. if they fail ... ken...See Moretapla (mid-Michigan, USDA z5b-6a)
