FIREPLACE HELP NEEDED - 14.5' outdated FIREPLACE
Comments (8)It isn't terrible, but does look dated. When I bought my house, the fireplace was terrible. I believe old, dated brick SHOULD be painted. You can use latex paint eggshell finish, diluted 50% with water and sponge on. It leaves the brick texture, without an awful high gloss fake look. I don't advocate whitewash because it doesn't look natural at all with most brick tones. Pick any neutral color. Don't use stark white, as that won't go with your furniture or the style of your home. You might consider BM Lancaster Whitewash. Looks really good with brick, and is a warm off-white. I used BM Classic Gray (a very light beigy gray) which was the same as my wall color and minimized the monstrosity. It doesn't take long to use a sponge brush. Very minimal effort. You can leave the arched section as is Often the brick there has soot, and without a ton of elbow grease is difficult to clean. Paint may not stick. But the rest is easy. Do vacuum first! Everyone who sees my fireplace now loves it (none of them are shy about telling the truth). I think your TV would look far better on a bigger media stand, or build shelves to match the alcove size. Semi-customized shelving and cabinets would modernize the look and look less jury-rigged. The mantle and upper wood sections might look a lot better painted to match the fireplace. I left my mantle which looks lilke yours. Once the brick was updated, the mantle actually looked way better. Good luck with your project....See MoreFireplace Help! Is our fireplace too small?
Comments (8)I don't think its too small if no tv. (however, if your tv is larger than 42", and you're mounting the tv on the fireplace, then yes, you want to go larger. look at all these pics w/tv's) (I hope you're not using that stone!) let me show you some examples. These inserts and tiled heights are very similar/identical to yours. here's how yours would look w/large tile I don't really like this look, and I don't like the shorty mantle. I like this. it has a black stone/tile surround and a nice oak mantle. you could do a shiplap or plastered wall above that mantle. photoshop. I'd do some built in benches on both sides Or, use a zellige tile and go all the way up. mantle optional, so is the hearth similar style w/out the hearth. your inset is about this size. I also like this one w/the board and batten above the oak mantle. you could use a gray quartz like this for the surround you asked about a marble surround. it would look something like this. Or this one, which is acutally very pretty and just about identical to your set up. I'm sure this is a 42" insert. there is a quartzite material around it, and the planks are walnut. (you can see the TV outlet. ) from the side so you can see how it's done. this one will have a mantle (see the supports in place?) I would totally do this. or the Zellige tile Here's a large format black porcelain tile that looks like slate. To me, the tv is a tad too large, and the mantle is too short. But I love the overall look w/the cabinets and shelves. this is a good example of the tv being larger than the box. how do you think it looks? what are your plans for under the windows? you could do a bench or something like this: here's another insert like yours (a bit wider) w/the Zellige tile and oak mantle. love this look too Little diff look. I'd rather have the tile around the box, but you could certainly do something like this under your windows and above the mantle. speaking of benches,,floating wood benches on either side please don't do the ledger stone!...See MoreTv over fireplace help!
Comments (6)Please help stop this awful trend of the TV over the fireplace. Just don't do it. It's horrible for watching and looks amateurish no matter how it's done. The illustration with the TV at mid-eye level is a little low for me. I like the middle of the screen about 6 to 8 inches above eye level when seated. Yes, center the TV on the wall with the artwork the arrange the furniture to face the fireplace and the TV...in an L shape....See Morestuck! floor clashes with fireplace -help please!
Comments (75)Thank you again to everyone who is “brainstorming” with us. To reiterate, We don’t necessarily hate the floors, or the fireplace the challenge here is that they just do not complement one another. Either one in a room without the other could work. Following up on some of the comments painting the grout seems like a reasonable thing to try. I believe it would make the floor more consistent and something that we could then work with (wall colours and accents to tie it in). I’m including 3 optionss for grout paint colors aganst 2 different colors of tile. Area rugs would certainly help break up the flooring and make the space more cosy so following up on some of the suggestions we have a couple of options from crate and barrel in the following images. Lastly we have two paint colours that were suggested Blackfox for potentially painting the fireplace brick and steamed milk as a possibility for wall color. Thoughts?...See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
