Here we go. I used your tile, well, because it was easier to do so since it was already angled correctly. The program I use has no way to reshaping things. While drawing it, I decided I'd like the wall above the fireplace angled too, so I did what I could to make it look that way. The program I use MS Paint, so there's only so much one can do. I've yet to get Power Point added to see if I like that better. In real life you could use smaller tiles on the side (here it would be leaving off the narrow tiles if it works with code for the fireplace, I don't know about gas, we have wood burning) to allow for a wider wood surround.

This was a fireplace and not a new set of logs that you put into an old fireplace, correct? Vented or unvented? Older gas logs retro fit into fireplaces sometimes did this to the surround if the vent wasn't open enough.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions! M Brown, I didn't think about the TV being over the fireplace. It is a working fireplace, but we never use it, so that shouldn't be an issue. decoenthusiaste, our adjoining space is a light smoky blue, and I agree, the blue and brown look great together. We are still playing around with colors but haven't found that "wow" combination. If anyone has thoughts on what to do with those bump-out areas, please let me know. Thanks!

This fireplace surround and entire wall is quite unique. I like the basket you used but the shape is a little off. I think instead of filling the place up with modern looking items and frames you could try to go for a more unique look to fit that wall. Rattan, wood and glass textures in light colors would look really nice here. It has a super earthy feel. I would paint the sides of the fireplace a different color than that dark sage (if you're open to it). The vaulted ceilings really make it look interesting.
