My current down comforter is noisy-- it doesn't bother me really, but I will be more careful the next time.

My best recommendation is for the down comforter made by the company where I purchased my down pillows. Warm Things was recommended here (maybe Zalco? Feathers? I don't remember who). At the time I purchased the Premium 700 pillows and I noted the same line has a down comforter as well. The Pillows and the cover are very soft and not noisy. I assume they have the same cotton covering. The ones i purchased were middle of the line price wise. (And thanks for the reminder-- i want to order 2 more pillows!)

My second recommendation is The Company Store-- i have purchased down comforters, feather beds and down throws from them. All soft and quiet-- but i don't remember which of their comforters i purchased. They all have different coverings so this is a half-baked recommendation-- but i have yet to be disappointed with any of their products.

IME, you are on an impossible quest. : )

No amount of reviews, advertising copy, ratings, word-of-mouth, or exotic adjectives have helped me identify which down or down alternative comforter will suit us both, where and when. (same with sheets, btw)

Moreover, price point, which is usually my North Star in purchasing decisions, has not had any demonstrable predictive value for me, either.

I think trial and error is the way to go. For example, I have stayed at a Sofitel near my office and that sold me on their bedding. You could also buy a few different comforters and try them (assuming you have a duvet cover to put them in at least for the trial).

I vote against a down alternative. I have bought those to stuff pretty duvets, not to use. They were rather heavy, not at all like down.

I have a crinkly down blanket. Drove me nuts for about one night and then I never heard it again.

Mine is from The Company Store. Its not noisy and I havent noticed significant shifting in the few years Ive had it. It comes in different weights.

I think most Company Store products are good quality. I honestly don't know a brand to suggest. Here in TN we have a very short time of really "cold", so no down comforters here, not even a down blanket. We too like our bedroom cool and my favorite thing when its cold is flannel top sheet and a good old fashioned quilt. I also have a blanket I love, but cannot find another one! It is not fleece, not that velour, vellux, but I guess somewhat similar. I've had it a few years and it's starting to get a bit nappy looking. It feels soooo good though!

I think your best bet would be doing as Mt. suggested. Bummer!

Zalco, I have never been more happy with a pillow! I did order 2 more today but i went with the over-filled (level 4) version for a little more firmness. My current pillows are level 3.

The negative reviews you mentioned, Katz might give me pause depending on how many there are. As I said, I have never been unhappy with a purchase but most of those purchases were prior to Home Depot purchasing The Company Store.

I am wondering why you don't want to use a duvet cover.. it will protect the down comforter and give you more style options. Is it the hassle of removing?

My DH is in charge of duvet cover wrestling in our house.

In the last 25 years I've purchased at least a dozen alternative down comforters (two houses, kids going to college and for their apartments) from the Company Store and I think they're excellent. Some have been noisy but I don't remember which ones but they would have been the less expensive ones because they were for my kids. The filling was the same, but for the kids I picked a less expensive fabric. One of the important features that I like about them is that you can order an oversize or supersize one. I like my comforters to cover the sides of the mattresses.

We bought a new bed for this house and i ordered the largest King size available - but this time I ordered Cuddledown - their sizes were larger than the Company Store. And you can return them, at least you could 4 years ago when I bought mine. Our was too hot so I returned it for a summer weight.

I also use a duvet that's sized to fit our comforters.

2katz, if you live near an Ikea, I recommend checking out their comforters. They only come in white, I believe, but they have a variety of fabrics and fillings. I bought a few recently for adult children who zigzag between here and college, and so didn't want to spend too much. I was pleasantly surprised, though, how nice they are.

I may be in need of a new comforter soon (it's finally starting to cool down here so I'm bringing out the winter bedding). I have a king, and I recall the Ikea king sizes being slightly smaller. But if you're looking for a couple of twins, they're worth a look.

I've purchased a duvet cover and flannel sheets from the Company Store in the past year and both had defective seams. I haven't been impressed with their down blankets either.

I like the down alternative comforters from Garnet Hill.

Home Depot bought the Company Store at the end of 2017. I bought a lot of new bedding in spring of 2017 when we moved. I wonder if that has changed the quality.

@Funkyart - I can deal with stuffing and unstuffing the cover but there’s something that really bugs me about how it kind of separates from the comforter and bunches up. I have somewhat of the same problem with top sheets. This only became an issue when I reached the age that I don’t sleep very well.

Bunny, Yes, I love that they are a local company. They used to have a store in Town and Country Village in Palo Alto, where I shopped. They left and I just order online. There is a Scandia Down place now, super expensive, not at all comfortable with the quality to $$$ ratio with them.

I get level 3 blankets because I like having the weight on me, always have. I keep my house pretty cool.

2katz - I add extra ties and loops to my duvets and comforters. Most of them only have 4 loops - on each corner. For a King size I add 4 more loops (in the middle top, bottom and sides) to the comforter with matching ties on the duvet.

Just saw this and it looks nice: a down blanket I have a years-old Pacific Coast comforter that has held up very well, and am now in the market for a twin for my granddaughter who is just now old enough for a blanket, so I saw this on their sale page too and thought it worth sharing.

I have used the Pacific Coast down blankets for years on our beds during the summer and early fall; I love them, although they crinkle a bit until they are washed a few times. I'm almost POSITIVE Costco is selling them for a much better price under this name: Allied Home. You can check the website and see?

I’m another who has a down comforter from The Company Store. My first one lasted 20 years! I bought our current one two years ago. I was uncertain which weight I wanted but the customer service rep was really helpful. It looks like the one I have is now on clearance - I have the White Bay oversized comforter but unfortunately I can’t remember the weight. I wanted one that would transition from summer to winter. I know I didn’t get the lightest one, but think I went one up from that. i never had a problem with the down shifting in my old comforter and don’t expect to with my current one due to its box construction. It’s even machine washable, as was my last one. I do not use a duvet cover on mine b/c I can’t stand constantly fixing/straightening them. I just have a white comforter and then keep a quilt over top.

I love the down comforters I got from Garnet Hill a couple of years ago, They’re just in an ample throw size but they come in standard sizes too. We liked them so much we got 2 more in different colors. The colored ones only have a 550 fill so they may not be as warm as you’d, but they sell others with higher fill count as well. I’m another who recommends using a duvet cover, something that’s 100% soft cotton and has tie strings inside to hold the comfort in place. If the one you get doesn’t have them, there are clips out there that can be used

A few years ago I replaced the comforter (from Sam’s) on our bed with another from Sam’s Club. It’s goose down, very warm, good quality but I don’t remember the fill count. While researching for it, I came across this article and found it helpful.

I really like my Scandia Down products. Everything is well-made. They also make a down blanket that comes in pastel colors, but it seems light for MN winters. They also make one non-down duvet in white. They used to have a store in the Twin Cities, but it closed a few years ago. Their customer service was excellent, so I wouldn't hesitate to order from them.

Macy’s has down down comforters. Sometimes (well, often), you need to see and touch the product you are buying.

I LOVE the Charter Club down comforters from Macys but they are white. We all use them in my house. they are very soft.

Well this weekend I was at my lake cabin and loaded that down comforter into the cover and used it for a few days. It didn't bother me like the one at home. I think this is because it's box stitched so the down doesn't shift around and the cover and comforter are from the same company so the fit is better than what I have at home. This comforter is a more crinkly one but it's in a flannel cover so doesn't bother me much. I prefer the soft, silent, floatiness of the one at home but the disadvantages outweigh those features.

So, now I'm on the idea of just getting a single new comforter for home that is either the correct size for the cover I have or buying a new cover too. Or still possibly getting two but I do think a cover is a good idea if it doesn't bunch up. There are some choices that don't come in twin size so I'll see. For now I'll reload the old one into the cover and use it until I figure something else out as it's cold now and we need the warmth! The summer quilt just doesn't cut it at this time of year.

something to note if you do want to have separate blankets: I 100% love it! but it's hard to make the bed in a way that looks good.

twins are big, they'll drag on the ground. I overlap them in the middle when making the bed. it looks a little odd, but I try to go for a "rumpled on purpose" look, which kind of hides it. when we're having people over and I want all rooms to look good, I actually stack the two blankets sideways and fold one down at the top. we separate them again when it's time for bed. it's kind of a pain, so I usually go for the "intentionally rumpled" look most days.

I like the products from Phoenix Down in New Jersey but I don't know if they come in colors other than white. You could always put a patterned or colored blanket cover over the duvet as a way of making the bed to hide the white bedding.

Adding, IME polyester is an alternative to down in the same way that ”golden vegan bars” are an alternative to butter. There is nothing inherently wrong with either of those alternative products but they exist in a different universe.

Company Store has changed most of their comforters and looks like they are discontinuing the one we bought most recently (White Bay - in clearance). I really love the soft cover on it. Other than that one, I know we have had the LaCrosse for the boys when they were young and I think of that as a crunchier cotton cover. Ours have on been on the tropical and lightweight end, so the opposite of what you probably want. I would suggest calling and talking to someone in their customer service. I've found them to be very helpful in the past.
