Backsplash and wall color time! Is this too dark?
Comments (10)I think the pc term is directionally challenged :) The slider and window are at 90 degree angles to each other so they cant face NE and SE respectively - they'd have to be on opposite walls for this to be correct. They're either NE and N in which case you get a little morning sun through the sliders, and no direct light through the window, OR SE and S, in which case you are bathed in light most of the day. So, if your kitchen filled with light most of the day this might not be your color. I'd go much brighter and a slightly different hue (like Aquatint SW6936). from mariakillam.com If you get little light this could be a nice deep choice for you, as would be the less saturated SW7617 (Mediterranea) or the more saturated Labradorite (SW7619) and Seaworthy (7620). You should check them all out in your own light. But if the color looks green in your space, you should consider a different hue. Comments (6)I think the platinum takes the fun out of your particular tile design. I'd go lighter like the white ( or other nice light color for your marble ). Or I'd go darker than the platinum. Was you sample totally dry when you took that picture? It took my samples over a day to really dry down for a realistic reading. Do some more samples. My carrara is more of a tannish color. I used Natural which was sort of concrete color. It had an ever so slight green to it. Other grays were pinkish and did not look good with my tile. My different trials in the picture were Natural & white, total Natural, & last, Natural cut with a little white. I ended up blending Natural with a bit of white in a 3:1 ratio for my final material. I wanted some contrast....See MoreHow important to WAIT until granite in, b4 deciding backsplash?
Comments (17)lowspark, you are a contractor's dream! Our contractor emphasized up-front that most delays are caused by indecisive homeowners, which was true for him because he was so on-the-ball. I can't imagine having everything picked and decided on before starting, but that IS the right way to do it. Because of my contractor's insistence, my KD helped me pick the backsplash before even the cabinets were in. We went to the tile store with a sample of the counter (quartz composite). I'm glad we did, because there were many elements in the backsplash wall that affected the design (a shelf, a niche, outlets, wall where there were no cabinets, transitioning the tile around window trim). Also, some of the tile took a long time to arrive. Actually, now I sort of wish we'd been bolder in the backsplash tile choice, but, it's very nice. So for design reasons, I'd like to choose the backsplash last, but for practical reasons and problem-prevention, I'm glad we didn't. Don't forget grout color! It's so often an afterthought, but it can really make a difference in how things look....See MoreMaybe I won't hate my kitchen any more-lighter backsplash(pics)
Comments (52)lynn2006, thanks for the link. I did find it. I think I've got it narrowed down to a 2x4 in silver sands slate or a quartzite in the golden white or oracle. I think the brick shape is a nice medium between the diamond I have now (and like the shape of) and 4x4 squares I don't care so much for.The store we hoped to buy it at (prices are great) doesn't carry Crossville, and that's where we'll be stopping on our way home from vacation, but I really want to look at the Oracle too so maybe we'll have to make an another trip to the Big City. Thanks very much to you and to all....See MoreSharon Fullen
