Disinfecting Seeds before Planting
Comments (2)I prefer a dilute solution of hydrogen peroxide over bleach before planting for sterilization. I don't think there is a big problem with sodium hypochlorite toxicity using the method you describe, but I might also rinse the seeds after bleach sterilization just to make sure....See MoreUsing chemical aids for germination. Comments (2)Persons, here on this forum if I recall correctly, have dismissed the hydrogen peroxide suggestion. I have used bleach as a disinfectant to attempt to reduce damping off. With seed I am unsure if it helped. But all chemical additives mentioned will lower the surface tension and might affect the physical chemistry of absorption. Physical chemistry, or at least that is what we called it a half century ago, is rarely discussed by plant enthusiasts....See MoreTrudi: Tomato disinfectant on your WS.org page?
Comments (21)I've done germination tests, the seeds sprout great when cleaned this way. I've done tests on seeds that have soaked an hour and from ten seeds I've gotten 90% germination. Most novice tomato growers are unaware there could be pathogens on seed exteriors transferred from their garden to someone else's garden; I think that once we are aware of that we have a responsibility to make the effort towards limiting pathogen transferrence from our plants and soils to anywhere else. IMHO, doing a sani-soak and scrub of homesaved tomato seeds is going to be helpful in that regard....See Moredisinfecting seed
Comments (3)Couple of books Ive read on micropropogation recommend 20% dilluted bleach. Ive found it disinfects the seeds really well too. I think 50% might be a little too much bleach, but you go with what works for you. Remember to also sterilize your container and soil. Microwave oven is a great autoclave. I usally nuke the the peat in the closed container for about 45 seconds. Let it cool off before you sow your seeds. Wahlaa!! No more fungus....See MoreArt Wood - SE UK
