help needed to choose a new hvac for 10 year old home in cary, nc
Comments (9)Finnicky I generally agree with the remarks from the previous post. It should be noted that on a BTU basis, the operating cost between HP and nat gas is basically a wash. See below. Cost per 100,000 btu of useable heat Heat pump: $1.10 Natural gas:$1.09 Like the other posters, I am surprised about the price of the XL16c and I also prefer the Trane over the Carrier package units. I would recommend a new lineset. What thermostat has been proposed? It makes a difference.plus I would want an outdoor thermostat to control the switch point between HP and nat gas. What size furnace is available for the 3 ton dual fuel unit? I would add the Ext warranty and a whole house air filter cabinet. Perhaps you might ask about the HW Mdl 200. If you have any hot/cold spots within home, now is the time to address. How many returns does your home have? You want to be certain they are sized correctly, located strategically for best airflow and overall comfort. IMO...See Moreinsulating our 100 year old house
Comments (15)The basic plan it to draw an imaginary line between the "inside" conditioned areas and the "outside" areas. Any place that those 2 meet, you want to seal up any air movement and then add a layer of insulation. (If you have plywood or similar on the floor, you might have to take that up temporarily to seal and add the insulation. ) For venting, you want vents at the lowest point and vents at the highest point and nothing obstructing air from flowing between the two. That way, cool air is pulled in from the bottom and hot air vents through the top. That keeps the attic cooler in summer and keeps heat from building up and melting snow in winter....See MoreRestoration of 150 year old house in Central City New Orleans
Comments (20)deco, this house is not in the Quarter. OP said it is in the central city area. There is a difference. OP, it looks so typically NO. I think that at this point you can do whatever you want with it as that is probably what the previous owners have all done to it. If it were my choice, I would choose to take it even more modern and not worry too much about restoring any really original outside to it, just my opinion. I lived there for a few years and have both sides of the family still there, but have never been involved in getting permits and such. With the experience with my families after the storm, I don't think that there are as many restrictions for what you can do there as one might imagine there to be, aside from the usual safety ones around electrical and plumbing, unless you have some historical designation. It is a pretty free wheeling place. The storm destroyed a lot of the old, but a lot of the new looks pretty darned good! It gave NO a refreshed look. At a price, yes....See More110 year old house with hot attic with 3 year old AC -
Comments (10)Is your attic finished, or do you have only boards over the floor joists. Homes of this age can be balloon construction, meaning you could drop a line from the attic and it would go through to basement level. I'm not a pro, but looked into foam injected (via outside) for a mid century home and was told that if foam was used, it would fill up wall cavities, making access to future electrical work very difficult. I opted for blown in cellulose by a highly reputable company who filled all voids to avoid heat loss, and installed a sealing attic entry door with vertical sides to preclude movement of cellulose. You might want to look at some DR. ENERGY videos before deciding on best type of insulation....See Morecat_ky
