Damage to shower base

My contractor installed a new Swanstone shower base and damaged it after installation. There is now a decent size chunk that is visibly noticeable (see picture). Is there anything I can do to repair this or make it blend in more?

"Is there anything I can do to repair this or make it blend in more?" Yes. Inform your contractor it needs to be addressed. These things happen. You should not need to do anything. A quick response from a contractor to fix this speaks volumes for their reputation.

Thank you! Unfortunately I was not overly pleased with the quality of his work (this included) so I don’t feel comfortable asking him to address as I’m worried it would be repaired in a sloppy way. If I asked him to repair is there anything I would request specifically?

I don't think so. That's a completely separate repair, IF it can be repaired. Also, any repairs would need to be done ahead of time. Perhaps some clamping and glueing, topped with some kind of trim molding? Post some pics, please.

I agree with the above procedure regarding cutting the stem above the damage and planting it in a "cactus" medium (use a stile knife). Keep the medium only SLIGHTLY moist. In fact, if you are using a prepared soil mix, do not water it after planting. And speaking about planting DO NOT plant it deeply or it will ROT. Aim for only an inch or so deep. Of course it will be top heavy so you could use some big rocks or bricks to prop it up. It WILL eventually root. Some people brush rooting hormone on their cuttings, but it's not even necessary with this plant, which btw, is NOT A CACTUS, it's an African Euphorbia. P.S., When you take you cutting WEAR GLOVES and cut it over newspaper as it will leak sap, AVOID GETTING THE SAP ON YOU SKIN AND EYES!! And I would not use the knife in the kitchen again!

They were super nice and accomodating when I sent in a request through their contact form with my questions. I didn't know they made 96" panels, had a corner seat, or bigger niche with a shelf until I asked. Also providing a "remodelers" trim that allows you to put the panels over existing tile is a huge bonus if you don't want to do a tile tearout. I think they thought of everything so wouldn't be surprised if they do your dual threshold. They sent me the following details on order fulfillment and shipping: "Once an order is placed, it will take 2-3 business days to fabricate and 2-3 business in transit from our Utah factory to get to Denver. The materials are fairly sizable, so they will be strapped to a large pallet and sent on a truck as an LTL shipment. The carrier will call you before making the delivery. They will arrange an appointment with you to make the delivery. You will need to be home to receive the delivery. They will drop the pallet at your front door or in your garage." Made in the USA is a huge plus so there is no delay. Also when I called to place the order we talked to the guy and asked about what aspects people had trouble with on installation and he walked us through his tips and suggestions. We had already watched all their on-line installation videos and read the instructions. Everything seemed doable and was well described.

Pull the plumbing please. I'd make a thin cardboard template in one piece, fold/curl it to get it out of the cabinet, then figure where to cut the cardboard so it can be reinstalled through the cabinet front without folding. Cut the new plywood floor according to your cut template. For the advanced class, tap the cabinet front off as well as the adjacent cabinet fronts. Rotozip or multi-tool the cabinet sides off just above the bottom dadoes. Template the cabinet bottom and install it in one piece into the dadoes. Hot melt glue the cabinet sides back on; maybe some blocking too. Reinstall the cabinet fronts.

I did contact Swanstone and requested a repair kit and they said they don’t make that color anymore unfortunately. Which is odd because I purchased it a few weeks ago from Home Depot.

Is it Swanstone solid surface, or the Swanstone product called Veritek? Veritek may not be repairable.

Thanks, Nancy! It says its solid surface, so I was a bit surprised that the chunk looks much lighter than the surface. The only thing Im seeing as an option online is a tub/sink repair kit that lets you try to shade the paint to match the surface. That makes me a bit nervous though.

Joseph Corlett, LLC should know for sure, but I don’t think you need a repair kit. You need Joe or someone with his skills to come and make a patch. The right person will have the skills to build up the material, match the color, and finish it off so you can barely see where it was. Solid surfaces are self-repairable by the homeowner if it is a shallow scratch or scuff. If the area is the one that looks beige in your photo, I wonder if your builder tried to ”fix” it it? Your builder CAN fix it himself, by paying to remove your shower and replace it, or he can pay for someone like Joe to fix it.

The most difficult part of this job is getting matching repair material. I could probably fake it with some homemade particulates and color match adhesive. It looks like someone tried to abrade it away already; it's probably too deep for that.

Thank you both! I spoke with someone else at Swanstone and it sounds like they are able to send a repair kit that should match so hopefully I receive that soon. You’re correct that my contractor tried to sand it down and honestly it made it worse bc now the area around it is fuller than the rest of the base. I’m sure he would come back and try to repair it but I’m not comfortable having him do that.
