What do you do with very diseased (blackspot) rose before winter?

Hi Houzz rose lovers!!

Since last year I decided to grow roses instead of vegetables.

Thanks to your posts/pictures/discussions, I was able to select roses I like pretty much spot on.

However, Generous Gardner and Evelyn are so, weak, diseased and didn't grow much compare to others (Crown Princess Margareta, Desdemona, Falstaff, Jude de Obscure, Royal Jubilee, Sprit of Freedom and couple of bargain French/Germans)

Since only the same grower carries them, I am afraid buying again will give me same result.

Those I bought in spring!!

Neither rose in your photos looks particularly diseased......some mild spotting on the second but nothing I would be overly concerned about.

Can I ask why you choose to grow them in containers? Container culture for any type of plant requires some rather specific care requirements that one can safely ignore if planting in the ground. IOW, it is a lot easier to grow plants in the ground than it is to grow them in containers unless you are experienced in container culture.

To answer your last two questions, plant them in the ground. They should be fine next season.

That's very interesting since compare to other roses, they are night and day differences in growth, foliage color, and retention of foliage.

Of course in the ground is ideal. However, I must grow on the balcony. Evelyn is already in biggest container I can put the hands on, Gardener is in original container.

I build things, and I am planting groundcovers, trees and shrubs so they don't totally fry trying to establish in summer. I am in San Jose, zone 15-also without rain but all winter long. I have been nursing my frost-hit citrus tree babies, and I am still harvesting raspberries from these crazy Italian bred ever-bearers! I built lovely wood cages to support these berries, five foot long rectangular boxes with cross members to support the canes, and stuck some finials on top of the uprights. Also filled out the under planting of alpine strawberries. I am making a grape arbor next weekend to span my driveway. I am installing solar powered light strings to give nighttime enjoyment- this garden is surrounding the kitchen door entry yard where all friends and neighbors sneak in to help us eat dinner, so I may as well make it pretty :) I am planting apple trees in a cordon along the driveway- opposite the berries- and considering chamomile and creeping thyme to carpet the ground- it's all wood chips from previous owner and I have to go slow as I want to install some stone pavers but only can afford two at a time . I am trying to make the garden areas look established and formal, my house turns 100 this year and is in a very visible urban neighborhood on a busy street so I can't have a tangle of dead tomatoes or blue tarp shade structure showing . My potager surrounds my driveway and side entrance and is very visible from the street. Hundreds of people walk by daily and I gotta show off! Hi Marlene, Im not much of a rose grower either, but IÂve had surprisingly good luck with the five that were in at this house when I bought it. Mine are all teas, and IÂve already cut mine down for this yearÂto about knee height. In spring IÂll trim out any dead wood and give the canes a fresh cut. The year we got all the snowstorms, I hadnÂt gotten mine cut down, and I had serious damage to my favorite one, a yellow, when the snow piled up on top of it and broke a couple of the main canes. Now I try to be sure I get them done before weÂre likely to get any heavy snows. But if yours are climbers, and they bloom on old wood only, you wonÂt get any flowers next year if you cut them down before they bloom, so when you cut them down would really depend on if they bloom on old or new woodÂand if youÂre willing to cut them down short and let them start over again. With the mildew, I can give you all the canned answers from when I was in the green industry, but the ONLY thing IÂve found to help prevent mildewÂand rustÂand black spotÂetc., is to keep them really well watered. Every year IÂve been better and better about making sure they stay well watered, and this is the first year I havenÂt had a problem with any of the funguses. And when I first moved in (the people who were here before me thought they were taking care of the few plants that were here, but they didnÂt know ANYTHING about plants) two of the roses were badly infected with rust and mildew. I never used any type of treatment, other than picking off badly infected leaves (to the point of defoliating those two a couple times) and throwing them in the trash. I donÂt know what the oils doÂIÂve never used them and have never heard of them being recommended for fungus, especially in summer, but the fungicides you can buy, along with things like baking soda (milk is supposed to help too) donÂt actually "kill" the fungus. I donÂt think thereÂs anything that does that. They just help slow it down somewhatÂsometimesÂor help keep if from starting if theyÂre not infected yet. And, since I rarely get rain, the leaves on mine tend to stay pretty dry, but I donÂt make any special attempts to keep them dry. As a matter of fact, I water my grass after dark and IÂm sure the mist gets blown onto the roses and they probably stay wet much of the night when IÂve watered. I donÂt believe, anymore, that that makes any difference! They seem to get better and better, the more, and more thoroughly I keep them watered. IÂve also noticed, when IÂm in Illinois visiting family, or any of the other very humid places I get to, that I rarely notice mildew on roses, or anything elseÂyet, here in Colorado it seems to run rampant. Since high humidity and wet foliage is supposed to promote mildew, that seems just a teensy bit backwardsÂand I think that theory is bunk! Just my personal opinion! I have come to the conclusionÂrightly or wronglyÂthat stress (the plant--not you!) is the primary cause of fungus! If you decide to wait till spring to cut them down, I do recommend putting on a pair of leather gloves and cleaning off as much of the foliage as you can, and picking up whatever is around the base of the plants. Getting as much of the mildew as you can out of the area is always a good idea. With the mums, I cut mine down in fall or over winter when the weatherÂs nice. I got one of mine cut down a little over a week ago, and the new growth at the bottom will pretty much just sit there smiling at me till spring. Actually, my plants are getting old, and next spring IÂm gonna dig them up and replant new sections of the plants. If they knew that, they might not be smiling!!! The rest of them IÂll be cutting down as soon as I find timeÂso I can see that "new foliage smile!". And I cut the individual stems all the way downÂless than an inchÂto the new growth at the bottom. But I donÂt really think it makes a whole lot of difference if you leave the old growth on over winter, or cut it off! I just like everything to look "neat" over winter, and, also, if I wait till spring and donÂt get around to it until after theyÂve started to grow, itÂs harder to cut them down without damaging the new growth. With the Diascia, IÂm not sure what to recommend! I was at PaulinoÂs the year that one was introduced thru Plant Select, and at that time we were never able to decide for sure if it was reliably hardy. If IÂm not absolutely sure something is gonna come back, I usually donÂt cut it all the way down till I can be pretty sure of the weather in spring. So you may want to leave it just as it is, or cut it halfway down, but leave at least some of the stems/foliage on over winter. IÂve never grown it myself? It depends on the type of rose. In my garden, the Gallicas get Autumn colors well before even the first light frosts, so their leaves are already "on their way out" so to speak. The Bourbons and HPs generally start getting more blackspot around first-frost time, so I guess that's their "Autumn colors". Most of those leaves fall off shortly after. So what I think you're asking about is what happens to actively-growing leaves when they experience a cold snap. Well, that I can also tell you. Here, it's not a light frost that does them in. It's more like temperatures below 25F. Initially, they don't look any different. But when it warms up again to above freezing, the leaves have a sort of "freeze-dried" look to them -- as though wilted, but still maintaining rigidity. If you see leaves that are turning yellow in color but are otherwise of "normal" texture, I'd say it has to to more with extra water than freezing temperatures. But take that with a grain of salt -- our conditions are very different. :-) ~Christopher

Spanish fly, it's almost that time to start thinking about putting yours in cold rooms. Crazy right? Where does time go. I have enjoyed many of your picture through this past summer.) Well, mine are all up on my flat roof and sprayed for the last time. Please no one get me wrong, I am not a huge fan of using chemicals on anything at all except my succulents and only sprayed in a limited area when they are all confined. This is why I am a huge user of fish emulsion which does a fantastic job on all my plants unless I miss one here or there which always happens. This chemical spray is a back up since I refuse to loose anymore come January or February and only to be caught of guard. For touch ups, or pop up issues if one should arise , that is where the Safer Soaps come in handy which I keep a constant supply of. Mike

In more humid climates BS defoliates the bush & if canes look black then there is concern rose may not survive. This is not your case.

Any BS you may have had may have slowed them down some but not to worry, they have enough growth to shake any issues off. I dont see any BS on your leaves. You have large healthy canes & lots of healthy looking leaves, still . Try to do things that would help roses to dry soil out if possible. Keeping bushes close to house under eaves/umbrellas where they dont get rained on too much could help. Water less.

For any rose that had any BS, remove any BS leaves that fell in the soil as BS overwinters in the soil. Afterwards, just leave them alone.

In spring when budding growth starts again, add some new soil and fertilizer which will give them a fresh start.

For cases w/ much BS or mildew spray w/Daconil, recommended by American Rose Society. It kills BS/mildew just like cleaners in bathroom kill mold. It is the most effective agent, but does not damage roses.

I used to live in Oregon…. roses may get a touch of BS when over watered, but not much… just leave them alone & next year they were fine. Giving them new soil every year-even freshen soil a little keeps them thriving in pots.

On a completely different note, if i were you i would out The Generous Gardener in the biggest container you have and Evelyn in whatever you have available until you can get her a big container too.

For me at least TGG is a BIG rose while Evelyn is just good sized

I guess the pictures weren't good. I will upload more close up once rain stops :) I also took most badly looking leaves, before the picture.

Overwatering can be the cause since it's on timer, not adjusted to temp/rain.

But I am glad to know the roses can "shake off".

Too bad Daconil is banned in my country in Europe. All the fungicides I can buy only prevent.

Hi Sheila

I am in the middle of Europe, not in the USA. USDA Zone 8a but can get down to -4F sometimes and 95F in summer. So, Austin roses should do well.

It is my laziness. I bought pot/soil but keep on postponing transplanting and now "yeah, it will go dormant soon so I will do in the spring" mode 😁

Ok, you are in Europe. Do you have high humidity or just a little? BS comes when too much humidity or rain which keros their roots damp too long.

Again, your roses still have really nice canes & leaves so it may jusy go away & not come back. Next year, you may try hand watering so you only water roots, try not to get leaves wet. Keeping the whole plant as dry as possible helps it to dry out-aereate properly invetween waterings.

David Austin roses do better when allowed to dry out. They mostly get BS in humid climates. Also, DA roses are delicate for snowy winters w/my temperatures being 20F-5F. I cover them w/burlap & mound mulchy bark around stems

to keep them warm during winter-then they do well! This is my winter protection. There are many ways to orotect roses through cold winters.

-4F is cold-I recommend winter orotection for your roses.

Some people try a baking powder solution for BS-recipe on internet. Try looking at AMERICAN ROSE SOCIETY for more sprays for BS.

Thank you for all those advice! I wasn't expecting you all trying to help my roses. So kind of you

But you are onto something.

I make sure leaves/plant are not wet (timed drip irrigation to the root directly) but I have never "dried out" the soil since most of them are in original small planters and I worried killing it by getting too dry. Humidity wise, its same as England, not necessary higher.

I will not overwater from now on!

All the neighbor's rose get bad blackspots, too. But Royal Jubilee is doing outstanding. I will post pictures of other roses.

What I can get hands on (Penconazole etc) I cycle them and sprayed but the moment I slacked.....

I used to use BS spray for my cucu (powdery mildew) but again, its always uphill battle.😒
