Errand days and movie rentals - Netflix a solution?
Comments (13)first off i must say, i LOVE my tivo, couldn't imagine living without it. for movie rentals though, i use my digital cable service with the "on demand" movies. it costs 3.99 for a movie and the movie can be watched any time in a 24 hour period. (this works out well if i order a movie at night when my husband is at work and he can watch it the next day while i'm at work). the digital cable service is a bit pricey at 75.00 a month, but that gives me digital cable in the bedroom with regular cable all over the house. i figure i'm probably making out on the plus side because i'm no longer paying continual late fees on the dvd's that never seem to make it back to the video store on time. my digital cable box has the built in dvr but it's garbage. i much prefer my good old tivo that we've had for 4 years now in our family room. the only problem with tivo and cable is that the tivo and the cable box have problems communicating for channel changes so i wouldn't recommend using the tivo with a cable box. it works great for cable running directly into the television though. i've thought about using netflix, but i was wondering how much control you have over the movies you get. from what i know about netflix, you have a "want to see" list and they choose for you what comes to you when you return a movie. i could see myself still using the "on demand" movies or the video rental store if i really had an urge to see a specific movie....See MoreHow Much Do You Pay for Phone, TV, Internet?
Comments (39)Yes, SW, we agree. When you have multiple users on any kind of data sharing system, it slows down. It's often not perceptible in real time, but it shows up as everything from ticks to pauses during HD streaming. I mentioned the ethernet connection as the most robust and stable, not as a necessity. It's the thing to compare the wi-fi to, given the same device/configuration. But that's assuming a short wire. I used to have to run a 100' ethernet cable up the stairs and through the maze every so often, before the double services, and it was noticeably slower than the 5' ones. :) LOL! Lukkiirish, I don't know about being a personal Google, but I often look things up. Like I looked up what my connection speeds were for this discussion. And why I didn't say what I actually pay for telecom because I'd have to parse too many bills to come up with a number. I can say that it seems to be in line with what others are paying for the bits I could compare off the top of my head. I do know a little about a lot of things and a lot about a few things, and I'm pretty good at researching the rest. :)...See MoreDo you have a big screen TV? And cable television?
Comments (63)Do you use it frequently? We use ours daily. We wake up to the news and I come home for lunch M-F and tune into shows during that time. We also watch TV at night, especially before bed. Do you spend the big bucks on cable for the TV and not watch it very often? Yes, and I feel ripped off with Directv. Also do you fight over it with your SO? No. We have multiple TVs so if we disagree on a show then I just watch in a different room. Our house isn't that big and it's just me and the hubby. We have a 54" in our living room and I don't consider that very big anymore. When we replace it someday we'll go to 65-70". Our living room is open to the kitchen and I have to squint to see the guide on my 54" so bigger is needed lol. In our bedroom I think we have a 46" ?? It's not very far from our bed so it's plenty big. And in the basement we have around a 50" but we never go down there. Our TVs are older but get the job done. It's so hard for me to spend money on an item when I have something that already works. So I just wait until things break. I'm down to my last working HDMI port on the living room TV so once that one goes then I'll cheerfully buy a new 65-70"......See MoreNo tv for near future
Comments (23)I use my smart-TV as a display for my computer so I reckon it becomes a smarter-TV. Samsung offers Samsung TV Plus. I briefly looked at it but it didn't seem to offer anything that interested me. And like most TV, it has too many commercials for me. (Any is too many for me) After having Amazon Prime for years, I just recently started watching an occasional movie. But I wouldn't pay extra for it. There's Youtube, Vimeo, etc. which I'll watch on rare occasion. I'm more into watching old TV reruns that nobody else would want to watch. I have several on my hard-drive, and sometimes start them playing randomly, mostly just for the noise. My snowbird neighbor has a dish on a pole in the yard, not on the side of the house. Would that work where you live? Looking at a simplified version of the FCC regulations, it looks like there are areas a landlord can prohibit a dish, but also areas where they can not...(https://www.dish.com/downloads/legal/Landlord-Permission.pdf)...See Moreseagrass_gw Cape Cod
