What kind of wood to use on vaulted ceiling?
Comments (3)personally I like beadboard with clearseal. light and shows the beauty of the wood. also light wood opens up the space. you could stain it to whatever color you'd like. but... before you install your beadboad put an air barrier on the joists/rafters. I find that wood ceilings leak a lot, when I blower door test the house. this entry for hot/cold air to enter has a big effect on the comfort/efficiency of the house. we use tyvek material attached to undersides of joists/rafters, draped down on walls for sheetrock to be installed over it. then attach the wood to the tyvek covered area. (ceiling joist or roof rafters depending on type of ceiling you have) also putting the beadboard on a diagional is a look I really like. (but that's just me) best of luck....See MoreInstalling sheetrock over sheetrock on ceiling
Comments (3)I see no need to scrape. I had a house in which the (dopehead) occupants packed heavy stuff in the attic supported only by the ceiling drywall. The trusses were 2' on center. The drywall bowed and cracked. Like you, I did not want to pull down all that blown-in insulation. So I used "strapping" (1 x 4 planks) 12" on center on the existing ceiling surface screwed into the trusses with 2 1/2" screws. I used a Tee-Jak to push up the strapping (and old drywall) tight against the truss. The new drywall went on the strapping. That dropped the ceiling 1 1/4" inches, not noticeable. The new drywall is much better supported and stuff in the attic should not damage the new since the strapping will support the accumulated "plunder"....See MoreTransitioning between vaulted wood ceiling and regular drywall ceiling
Comments (8)<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><md>Thanks PPF for the suggestion! I appreciate someone actually giving me some practical advice. I will pass this on to the contractor. Wow Jan, you’re quite the positive one aren’t you?! I wasn’t asking for your opinion on the overall design of my house. I’m quite pleased with everything I’ve done in there! And I AM friends with a great electrician, but he hasn’t installed any of the lights in the living room yet. Nor has he finished installing all of the kitchen lights. Plus, I took this picture in the middle of the night last night so it looks much darker than it actually is in there. Thanks for your thoughtful input though. Patricia, it looks like flooring because it is flooring! I couldn’t find any “ceiling” boards that I liked or were wide enough, so we got creative. It’s acacia wood and it looks beautiful. I just wanted help with a trim piece, not redesigning/deconstructing my room!...See MoreVaulted ceiling--remove popcorn, texture/paint vs cover in wood planks
Comments (8)No I really don't want to texture the ceiling, but it is my understanding that getting that nice smooth finish on a ceiling adds a lot to the cost if you just remove the popcorn and have to deal with a not so great surface that is left after popcorn removal. So, you are suggesting that we instead just install a new 1/4" layer of sheetrock on top of what is already there. Correct? Do you know approximately what the price differential is to take the cover up approach vs the just start all over with a new topcoat of something?...See MoreHG Design
