What would you do with this window configuration?
Comments (5)You guys are AWESOME!!!! Montel, I like your thought about how our initial response to something is often more intense than the way we feel later. I have learned that my initial reaction is often overdrawn, and not trustworthy! In this case, I am fairly sure we can improve on this, and since it is an important room in the house, my husband and I will have to address what it is worth to us. Bevangel, I was just using paintbrush to change the size of the transoms, too, and I was lowering the windows to make the grille pattern line up better, but yours is way better than mine, so thank you so much. I don't even mind the idea of the center transom over the door staying as is and being different from the windows, since the door proportion is different from the windows anyway. The reason this all happened is that we were fooling around with different ideas, and then the freak snowstorm in October happened. We lost power, and as a result, lost a few days of work time while we dealt with the storm, and then we had to make a quick decision to get our order in for the next trailer. I was aiming for the space to look kind of like a converted porch rather than going with all french door panels, hence the mixing windows with french doors. Our GC is a fantastic carpenter, so we were planning on creating interest with trim. If we had used Andersen's tool for designing, we could have avoided being surprised by the glass size in the transoms, but it is what it is. Thanks, again, for this help. I have felt badly about not commenting much on other people's questions, but I have been so overwhelmed with our project that I have been selfish in the way I use this forum. I truly love dreaming and thinking about houses, so I pledge to be more helpful as soon as my head is above water!...See MoreWhat would you do with this window?
Comments (12)bunglaow, Just a few hours ago, when I had to take Mum to the doctor, I thought 'WHY didn't I bring my camera over here?' I have been going to over there several times a week, and forget it each time. but NEXT time, I'll try to remember, and take a pic for you. I recently painted her bedroom Ben Moore's 'Fennel Seed'. She needed something safe, although there are many colors in that fabric that would allow you to go in several paint directions. I have to say that I was thrilled when I put up the window treatments at how well they looked against that paint color. I bought the fabric on fabricguru.com for $7.95 a yard, but they are sold out now. It cost $130 for the fabric and lining, and if we had bought them through CC, what I made would have been $500. :-)...See MoreWhat would you do with these windows?
Comments (7)We have a small living room with different sized windows with woodwork - three large almost floor to ceiling front windows and then two shorter windows over built in bookshelves flanking the fireplace. Thus, we did not want drapes or anything heavy that made the room feel smaller or obscured the woodwork. We ended up with hunter-Douglas top down/bottom up honeycomb shades in the same linen color as the woodwork mounted inside the window frame. They are generally kept about half-way up -- providing privacy, but letting in light and views of adjacent trees/sky. It is nice to open from either the top (allowing privacy/light) - or the bottom (reducing glare from sun in the morning and allowing views outside to watch kids) or fully opened or fully closed. We love them!...See MoreWhat would you do where window abuts backsplash
Comments (16)Yes, a finish carpenter would do just fine. In fact, anyone handy with wood working tools would be fine. It really is an easy task to accomplish. I would not remove any drywall, especially since you have 5/8". 5/8" is normally used for fire code purpose, commonly referred to type "X". Your local jurisdiction building department will gladly answer any questions to if you are permitted to mount any surface to replace drywall. Here, paneling etc must go over drywall. You can do a search for type "X" drywall, to find out where it's mostly installed. Just to clarify with what I posted earlier about running an extension on the back side of the casing. Should the BS be run as posted (stopped short of the rough opening of the window), the casing would set on top of the BS until the BS stops. Then the extension on the back side would be the filler of the gap of between the casing and drywall. The casing would be brad tacked to the jamb extensions, and could be dabbed with adhesive on top of the BS. I believe this would present the cleanest look. Of course I may have confused you by trying to explain! Ugh, always easier to do, than explain....See MoreMelissa Rutledge
