I think it depends what the two showers are for: one person or do you plan for the shower to be used by two people at the same time? In the case of the latter, I have only seen that in locker rooms. We recently rebuilt our rugby clubhouse and the guidelines we were given for that were 20" from wall to shower head and 30" between showers. Those were taken from the sports governing body in the UK, but might provide a guide to work with.

Forget it, Two humans will not stand next to one another in that 38 inch wide. shower, About the only place it would be likely to have a set up as such? Prison. No glass or half walls in prison, either. Just a big ugly shower room.

A very large person can shower under ONE shower head. An elephant can, for that matter, though no clue how one gets an elephant through the front door.

Something does add up in the drawing. The wall tiles are shown as 6" wide. There are nine of them along the wall with the showers. That makes it 54" wide. But you are saying it is 38". Either way, I agree with Jan, that it is not enough space if you intend it for two people.

The smallest single shower pan you can buy is 32x32 and most bathtubs are 33" wide. You can get a shower in that amount of space without knocking your elbows on the walls.

If your picture is depicting the 60" wall it would be 15" from the wall and 30" between. Same as code requirements for a toilet. I think you could have 2 people shower side by side in 60", but I think it may be uncomfortably close. Why don't you mock up a 60" wide space somewhere like a hallway and have you both stand side by side, go through the motions of washing your hair and the bottoms of your feet and see how it feels.

Most bathtubs are not 33” wide. 30 or 32” are your typical sizes.

This 2 heads on one wall of shower that is not exceptionally long or wide confuses me. It would make sense if one of the heads was a hand held sprayer but the sprayer would be a single unit with the wall mounted one. A wall mounted head and a ceiling rain head makes sense…or, a shower head on each end at opposing walls. The placement you show seems too close for comfort or logic.

IMO not enough space for 2 humans to shower anyway so one head and maybe a rain shower head from the ceiling might work. BTW why those small tiles for the walls IMO the fewer grout lines the better in a bathroom I like 12 x24 tile for both the bathroom floor and the shower walls with the same color tile for the shower floor but smaller it make a samll bathroom look larger and cuts the grout lines down a lot. Maybe even a shower head at each end .

The showerheads would be on the 60-inch wall and the 38 inches is the depth of the shower. The intention would be to be able to shower with my partner side by side.

I'm less interested in the two shower heads at opposite sides because we'd be facing away from each other and wouldn't be able to make the half wall to allow in natural light.

You do NOT want shower heads on the back wall, spraying out to the glass and door. It isn’t nearly deep enough front to back for that. Not unless you’re willing to spend the upgrade funds to do the whole room as a waterproofed wetroom, with nonfoors or other barriers.

But a 60” shower side by side is going to be for skinny very friendly occupants. It won’t have that dual showering happen more than a half dozen times before it gets to be annoying getting hit in the jaw with an elbow. It’s a foot too small in both directions to really do this.

How about you just take turns. It's too crowded for TWO. Unless you are on mommy's account and you are nine years old, and sharing with another prepubescent nine year old.

It's too small. Plumb it however you want, and THEN find out. It is Too Small. It is too shallow to put the plumbing on the 60 inch wall, it is too narrow to put two on the 38 inch wall. But go ahead. Put two, four, on the ceiling. Whatever you want. Lather up.

PS. A bathtub ( above ) is not a good comparison. It is why, despite you CAN use glass on a tub, most have shower curtains for ELBOW room and you do bang your elbows on the glass................all alone in there.

I have a 38 x 63 inch shower. If you use rain heads, you can have two in 60” length and they will give you no trouble at all with the glass. Rain heads that are pointed down work well in a 38” wide shower. I use my 10” Hansgrohe rain head for about half of my shower, and my hand held for the other half. Before I started using products in my hair, though, I could use my hand held for just the final rinse.

As for spacing, mine is smack in the middle of the depth of my shower, so 19” from the wall. It is a good spacing for not hitting elbows on the wall. Since the person discussing UK group showers said 30” is right for strangers, I would guess that you could set a rain head 18” in from either end, leaving 24” between the two bathers who presumably like each other and don’t mind touching at times.

I would add at least one hand-held in order to be able to spray up and under any body areas if needed. You will also need it if you don’t want to get hair wet and don’t want to wear a cap. Here is my shower. Oh - get taller glass if you want to be less likely to send a plume of hand-held water over the side and into the room.

To the OP:

Ifyou decide to go with a rainhead, make sure you love that style. Some people are big fans, but I'm not one of them. I want my body to be continuously wet in a shower without having to have water pouring over my head all the time. With a wall-mounted shower, I can aim it where I want; with a rainhead, I can't. In your somewhat narrow shower I would find a rainhead to be annoying. Just my 2 cents....

Many houses will need something to maintain the water pressure in multiple showerheads going at the same time, and remember that you will also go through your hot water at twice the rate as you would with one. I was involved with a project where there were multiple shower heads and upon testing the hot water lasted about 5 minutes. That house ended up needing a pressure system and a separate hot water tank to run the master shower. (I was not involved in the shower design, I just know from being onsite that it required extra work and money and infrastructure to get it to work properly).

Go for a rain shower @Hunter King, You'll get a size large enough to rain water on two people while in the shower, (the shared umbrella concept; 25-30% of the two of you collectively will not get water raining on the body)

Its better than two shower heads IMO! The sizes for rainshowers are 8", 10", and 12". the 12 one might solve your purpose?

Palimpsest has some very important points. The drain is another issue. You may need a bigger drain to make sure that two showers’ worth of water makes it down without making a lake at your feet.

Of course, if you live in California, this whole idea is impossible, too. Their laws do not allow two different heads to be on at the same time in a shower, no matter the size.

I’m with Jan on this! Shower by myself. That being said, I have played with the idea of a showerhead at each end so that I don’t have to readjust it every single time I get in!

@Nancy in Mich I love your shower! I do think the combo of a ceiling mounted rain shower, handheld, and wall-mounted is the best bet for this configuration.

My partner and I are both small people (I'm 5'8 and she's 5 ft). We shower together 50% of the time in our current tiny tub set up, so shower that works for two people in our first home is very important. So if we WERE to go with the shower heads on the back wall, I'm hoping that would work for us.

IF we put them on the back wall, how much would you recomend we increase the shower width (currently 38") to make it more comfortable? We might expand the bathroom anyway for a seperate tub and just realized we could add some more space there too if we do. We might be able to do 42" without expanding or 48" if we do.

I am a very large person, well over 300 lbs. I tend to stand facing my curtain or back wall, but it is not uncomfortable to stand facing the short, 38” wall. Going to 42” would be enough, I would guess, unless you need extra inches for the glass. I would think that my shower curtain is inset about as much as your glass would need to be, though.

A wall-mounted shower head could be on the side wall, as mine is, if both of you don’t need to use it at once. You could get the kind of valve that turns on one or the other of two shower heads, run by it’s own thermostatic valve. Using two of those set of controls could ensure that one rain shower is never on the same time as the wall shower and that the second rain shower is never on at the same time as the hand held. You might have to switch sides at times, though. The advantage of two separate temperature valves and their own set of controls that allow only one head at a time would be that you drain the water heaters at a set rate, and no faster. It makes it easier to add on an extra water heater. You could get a tankless heater for one shower set up and run the other off the house’s existing system. You would be spending $2000 -$4000 for just shower fixtures, though. Plus the tankless water heater, and all the plumbing. It would be very unlikely that you are without hot water in both shower systems at once, though. You need to run this by a professional. I am just a homeowner. Don’t forget the proper size drain.

Oh to be young and in love again! Even at age 60 I enjoy sharing a shower and having someone there to wash my back. My sister and I took a shower together just last week after enjoying a sit in her hot tub.

If the two of you can manage in a standard bathtub you would probably be fine with your planned space.

Are you planning a tub for 2 as well? I love my deep oversized bath tub. (36 x 72 x 21)
