Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Master Bath remodel help

Im feeling a little unsure….redoing our master bathroom. My vanity is a white standalone (meaning it has legs) the sinks are the bright white (shiny) kohler veil half vessel sinks. My floor is a glossy tile-seenin the last photo, and also proped up next to the quartizite slab. Shower floor is also in last photo, shower will be white subway tiles (satin finish) have not yet decided pattern or grout color. My tub is white free standing, matt finish. So you get the idea, that I have matt and glossy textures going…so the slab you see is a leathered finish. Is it good that it is not a white and will compliment the other elements, or will it look dirty? I also think I want LED/backlit vanity mirrors. If anyone has a brand the suggest, Id love your input. And please if you have input on subway tile patterns chime in (high ceiling shower with large glass door front.)

Those LED/backlit mirrors are not good for much of anything. The lights are not bright enough or positioned to properly illuminate a persons face. I really don’t think you could apply make up or shave using just a LED/backlit mirror alone. You would still need another source of light to make those practical. Check those mirrors out in person before you commit to using them alone.

Thanks Charles! I wish I lived somewhere that I was able to do that -UGH- I do have 2 can lights, a light in the fan, two large windows, and Im looking to replace 2 sconces with 2 new sconces that would allow 4 60watt bulbs.?.? altho that would not be over the vanity...

A couple of things. With regard to the chimney stack, I recommend posting on the Remodeling forum of GW. With the existing closets in your bedroom and the guest room, could you totally take that space over and use part if it for an enlarged bathroom and the other part, a walk in closet oriented the other direction? The guest bedroom could have a closet built on the wall behind the toilet. Maybe thats workable maybe not. I would draw out all your dimensions on graph paper. Then taking tracing paper cut out to scale furniture (beds, vanities, nightstands, etc) and bathroom fixtures. Then place them around your rooms to see what fits and doesn't fit.

Oh dear, Kim. Just don't fall over in a dead faint when you get the demolition bill! That's a lot of tile. In a room that large, I would keep the tiled areas to only the wet areas. No matter how warm the color of the tile, it still looks cold to have that much hard surface. Here's some photos containing elements from the Craftsman style of your home. We removed a box light in our kitchen then repaired, textured and repainted ceiling. We used the electrical that was up there to hang pendants. In a bathroom, I'd probably put in recessed LED can lights. Or if you want a ceiling light fixture plus some can lights, that could work also. As long as you'll be messing with the ceiling, go ahead and put lights wherever you need them.

Hi, Denise. (a) YES on the pocket door. My husband and I redid our master bath and did a pocket door, I love it. (b) Do you really want your closet open to your bathroom? I have never had that, but seems to me the bathroom would get steamy when you take a shower, then your clothes would get subjected to humidity. although understood if that is your only option. (c) re having a WC or privacy wall - someone made a point about it being difficult to get in there with a wheelchair or a walker... agreed. also: we thought about doing that in ours, opted against it. works fine... because DH uses the hall bathroom when he needs to do his business, ha! I use our bathroom but just lock the door. not sure how well that would work for you. Below is the layout of our bathroom in case it helps. the staggered vanities work well for us, and the shower is a nice size. The thing in the lower right corner is a stacked washer and dryer. you could have it be a linen closet.

I agree that you need better lighting at the vanity area. While I appreciate the desire for a sleek look in the room, back lighted mirrors are useless for things like makeup, etc. Also, my concern is with the finish and scale of the floor tile. While beautiful, it will be slippery. Perhaps change it to matte?

I would describe the LED/backlit mirrors as more of a form of mood lighting or even a night light. I considered them myself and was shocked at how impractical they were for the price.

Other tips I learned on my bathroom remodel. Think about putting the entrance to the shower close to the shower head and controls so you can reach in and turn on the shower and adjust the temperature without having to stand in the shower and get all wet before you select the correct temperature.
Also, put a towel bar where you can reach your towel while standing in the shower so you don’t have to exit the shower all drippy.
I’ll share more if I can think of them. 😄
